HMS Fiji was a Light Cruiser of the Colony Class and the first of a total of 11 built to enter service.
She was launched in May 1939 and during her service spent time in the Atlantic and Mediteranean theatres. She was sunk by German bombers off Crete on 22nd May 1941. Although low on ammunition she had been sent back with another Light Cruiser HMS Gloucester to rescue crews from the destroyer HMS Greyhound which had been sunk earlier. Both Gloucester and Fiji were also sunk.
To quote Admiral Cunningham, the commander of the British Mediterranean Fleet, speaking of events around Crete and ship losses in particular -- "It takes three years to build a ship, but 300 years to build a tradition,"
In total around Crete the navy lost 3 cruisers and 6 destroyers and suffered damage to seven other vessels including the battleships Warspite and Valiant.
