Re-work of Agracier/CzechTexan Viet Minh map.
« on: September 29, 2012, 01:19:05 PM »

Hello all, for some considerable time I've wanted to update this lovely map by Agracier and CzechTexan adding to and correcting certain parts of it.

Made for Dark Blue World, if you use any other mod pack you may need the original map textures for ag_Viet_Minh and PS_South_VietNam.

I have now removed my link to this map as there is now a much improved version available by CzechTexan found in this thread:

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,51748.0.html

This thread will be left as it is so that anyone can see what was altered from the first version. ;)

Changes so far:

Tong airfield added approximately where I believe it was but consider this merely a place holder until further information becomes available.

Using the ed map as a guide all the main roads have been added to the map.

Adjustments have been made to map_c to remove the tiling of the land seen previously in the Gulf of Tonkin, also the river from Hanoi to the sea has also been re-drawn as it was dry land in places.

Sea plane landing and take off points have been added at Hanoi and Haiphong.

The rail line from Haiphong through Hanoi to the Chinese border just beyond Lang Son has been added.

The airfield and river course at Lang Son have been added.  A very special thank you to Anatoli for providing details of the town and airfield.

A modified rail station has been added to Hanoi using a copy of the original at Haiphong.

The map uses my South Vietnam textures rather than the originals, a trial was made with other textures but for now just the Vietnam ones are used.

I've included the map in a new folder so this is the entry for the all file:

ag_cztx_PS_Viet_Minh ag_cztx_PS_Viet_Minh/load.ini

Gulf of Tonkin.

The re-worked river in Hanoi.

Catalina departs from the port at Hanoi.

A train departs Hanoi for the Chinese border.

The protagonists in the Lang Son incident 1941.

All the original object detail by CzechTexan remains but the port at Hanoi had to be adjusted slightly following changes to the map_c.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

It's great that others help finish partially done map projects. Looking forward to flying on the rework.

However I seem to be missing the textures for this rework. I have DBW 1.71, but apparently not the necessary textures. Would it be possible to upload them ?

Hello Mark, hope you enjoy this one as much, it was an absolute pain putting in the roads I start to twitch now when ever I look out at tarmac. ;)  I painted them in first but it is immpossible to get them where you want exactly so it was necessary to follow the whole route adjusting both the roads and terrain. :P

Hello Agracier, now I come to think of it when I first tried to open the map I was also short of textures yet the Viet Minh and South Vietnam maps are both installed in DBW ???  Not sure why there is this problem but I'll put a link to both in the first post.

I do hope you like the changes I've made so far to the map.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Hello guys, the first post now has two extra links.  One is for the textures only and the second contains the map, textures, skins for the missions and a skinmod I use on the Vietnam maps. ;)

Glad you like it Blumax, hopefully now the real hard work is out of the way I can actually start to enjoy it myself. :)

I have an old Vichy Indochina campaign which I can now update and put the protagonists in the right place, previously I had to use the Thailand map with a ships runway to represent Lang Son.  I will also be able to update it with all the mod planes that have come along since. 8)

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Do you have to have some other map under this one to make it work?.............. it doesn't load on any installation on my computer...

Hello Hoss, I'm not sure what you mean by having some other map under this to make it work, providing you have added the new entry for the all file shown in the first page and providing you have all the textures it will load as any other map.

If however you are missing a texture this is what will happen:

The map will start to load as shown here and if all is well you will have the map appear.

If you are missing a texture the screen will display an error message at the bottom.

If this happens press Shift and Tab together and you will see this information on the screen.
Where the arrow is should tell you what texture is missing.

Let me know what you get and I may be able to sort it for you.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

I got the map working too ... the lowland rice fields look wonderful by the way. Very atmospheric ... I see that there are still 15 slots for textures  available for use ...  man, that is a whole universe of landscape options ... maybe some additional texturing might be in order - say for mountains and highlands ... additional variation in textures in those areas might look great ...

And it's a bit of a shame there aren't very many different Far Eastern objects to use in populating maps.

Nice work on the map ...

Hello guys, glad you got things up and running.  Not sure why some have this problem and others not although I think there was an additional maps update by UP~Boomer which I guess some may not have installed.

Agracier, I'm glad you like the rice field texture it is a creation of our shallows Master Bombsaway.  The original was much more colourfull but I altered it to better blend with the textures I had for South Vietnam, there are a few more in the download.  I think it captures the feel rather well although I have seen some experiments by yourself and I think Uufflakke which actually look more like there is liquid there.  There are quite a lot of slots still unused as you say, on the South Vietnam map I had a tree file for most of the main textures so they took up most of the slots.  The idea was to create something which looked more natural around the edge of airfields without using tree objects, some liked it others not, it can create problems in sim.

My problem is now to find textures or make them that blend with what I have or go for a completely new look, however, most seem to like the overall subdued effect of what I used for South Vietnam so that is the way I went here. I think it allows the two maps two run alongside each other in a campaign without there being a huge difference in the look and feel of what is the same country although I do feel there is a need for more variety.

The map is still very much a WIP, not quite sure where it will go from here, the alterations I intended are done apart from an airfield I need to add to Son Tay which I think is the original position of Tong airfield home to E.C. 2 595s MS 406s.

Anyway for the moment hopefully those that use this will be happy with it as is, what the future holds in store is yet to be decided.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D
