4K Screens & Il-2
« on: May 22, 2015, 06:43:20 AM »

A while back I bought a 4K screen - resolution 3840x2160. It's wonderful and detailed but it does have 1 big drawback: Il-2 just won't work. The game starts (yes I changed the config.ini to show the new res) and gets to the main menu screen but then the mouse either freezes or just disappears. That means that it is virtually impossible to activate any of the submenus like the Quick Mission or Full Mission menus ... and that means no flying of course.

I've tried about everything I could think of, got the help of a few total computer nerds and geeks and even they have given up. One suggested that the buttons do not resize according to the new resolution or something of that nature.

In any case, I sorta miss Il-2 and would like to get it working on my 4k screen.

Does anyone have any solution for this?

And also, is this also a problem on other screen resolutions above 1920x1200?

I have a 3440x 1440 screen resolution, works with IL2 no problem, maybe it's your graphics card
Code: [Select]
[window]
width=3440
height=1440
ColourBits=32
DepthBits=24
StencilBits=8
ChangeScreenRes=1
FullScreen=1
DrawIfNotFocused=0
EnableResize=0
EnableClose=1
SaveAspect=0
Use3Renders=0
WideScreenFoV=1
UIColor=0
UIDetail=0
UIBackground=en

Hi!

I can't help in this kind of trouble but I'm very interested in your trouble because I have planned to buy a 4K monitor in the next future!

Only thing that I know is that at 2560x1600 (+ or -) resolution the game is correctly showing....there are some topic that report this....

Hope to see good news soon!

Good Luck!

Thanks for all the quick replies.

I tried using the config.ini values given by Steven. I saw that these lines were not in my config.ini:

WideScreenFoV=1
UIColor=0
UIDetail=0
UIBackground=en

I added them and set the appropriate res values. But, sadly, still the same. Games starts up, beautiful intro screen. And in main game screen the mouse disappears so it's not possible to access Quick or Full Mission builders.

So, back to the drawing board.

I guess it could be my graphics card - nvidia Ge Force something or other, one of the higher end cards. It worked fine with my old 1920x1200 screen and Il-2. If I knew it was due to a vid card I'd buy a new one, but I don't want to buy one unnecessarily.

What about go to the desktop and then return into the game by keyboard keys?

That was a good idea, just tried it but unfortunately it doesn't make any difference. No matter how many times I leave the game by keyboard and return, the mouse still disappears ...

Another thought....try using a mouse with a pointer with higher resolution or use a higher dpi value for what you have?

Send a PM to Dakpilot.
He plays BOS on a 4k television. Perhaps also  IL2:1946. If so he can share his settings with you.

By the way, 8k is on its way.

I'm gonna have to figure out how that works. I never knew you could change mouse pointer resolution ...

But at at least by adding the 4 last lines from Steven's config.ini, I managed to get Il-2 to work on my 4k screen, BUT in a 1920x1200 resolution. Which means there is a large black border all around the game, but it does work as it should. So that's a partial victory ... for which many thanks.

I can't say what resolution the game is actually on screen. Cause at 1920 that would mean 1/2 the size of a 4k screen, but it looks more like it takes in about 3/4 of the screen width. I've no idea how to measure pixels on a screen.

And in any case, even in 1920x1200 mode on a 4k screen, the color and quality is way above that of an old, non-IPS screen ...

Arggghhhh ... it is impossible to keep up with this stuff ... always something new coming up that makes the old stuff obsolete ... I'm still waiting for 4k movies ... ha ha.
