Operation Channel Airfields!
« on: January 08, 2011, 03:27:52 PM »

Hi all,

I went to play a mission on my Channel map today for the first time in a while, and I was surprised to find that I was no longer happy with the appearance of the airfields as plates. I'm also aware that using the large plates for the airfields adds something like 240mb in textures to the demand on the system, so I decided to do something about it. So, whilst I work on my Kharkov map I'll also modify the airfields (1 or 2 a day) to remove the plates and replace the taxi ways and runways with 'regular' plates. I've already done Middle Wallop and I'm very pleased with the results. I'm sticking to making them historically accurate, but I'm ok to allow a little difference in order to not use the massive plates. I won't be moving or adding anything else so it won't affect any campaigns or missions you have with the map, it'll just make the airfields look better. Between the two maps (1940 and later) there's about 75 airfields, so it'll be a little while, but I'll get there.

Sounds like a big project, Canon. I'm no stranger to big map building, so let me tell you I certainly appreciate your dedication. I think making the airfields out of regular plates will give the map a more "seamless" look as well.

Good on you :D

VOLUNTEERS WANTED!
« Reply #3 on: January 08, 2011, 05:38:59 PM »

BRAVE VOLUNTEERS WANTED!

I've just had a thought - if I had a couple of volunteers I could get this done a lot quicker.

Basically, a volunteer would need to do the following:

  • Make sure they have a working copy of my Channel Map
  • Be able to use FMB+ to add things like runway plates to missions
  • Install a new set of runway plates I'm using for this project
  • Use FMB+ to place the runway and taxi plates over the existing pattern of runways and taxis on a few airfields
  • Save the mission and email it to me. I can extract the info and put it straight into the actors.static file

So, if anyone has read that and is interested, please drop me a message and I can sort things out for you.

Thanks

Joe,

Please consider making this map to use |ZUTI|'s excellent friction mod. I'll tell Boomer to give you a hand if available ;)

Cheers :)

Does the friction mod have different versions for 4.09 and 4.10? And are they imcompatible? So if I use the 4.09 friction mod on this map, is it useless to 4.10 users?

Also, got a link to download it?

Hades -Thanks for the link.   if I use the 4.10 version of the friction mod on the map will 4.09 users be unable to use it?

mad_pilot - I no longer have a direct link to just the map (although it's on my hard-drive). It's been incorporated into many mod packs however which is how most people have it.

Volunteers - check PMs!  Thanks.    More volunteers wanted! You can commit to as many or as few as you want.  Thanks

I too need a link to the map, as I use a modact 2.5b 4.10 game for mapbuilding.

There are two versions of friction mod : one for 409 and other for 410. You need to give the same set of airfield coordinates for both versions of the map, at the end of load.ini file,  it is on the user, which version of friction mod he applies. Verified with my EastBalt map.
Excuse me for hijacking the theme, just my 2pence.
N.B.: friction mod serves for all the maps the user has installed , and which have the proper section in the end of load.ini file,  it is not map sensitive.
