Canon, once modified will your map be lighter than the old one?

Yes, lots. The actors.static file will still be about the same size, but the problem has always been the large airfield plates used for the airfield textures. Each one is about 4.5mb, and there's about 60ish airfields. So that's about 270mb of memory texture space needed, whic puts considerable demand on any system. With hindsight, I realise that perhaps it wasn't the best approach. With new runway and taxiway plates however I'm now able to get the level of historical  fidelity but without the system demand.

Volunteers - thanks to KevinP a way to edit the airfields to be translucent so you can see any plates that vanish beneath them:

So, navigate to your MODS folder and find the folder that contains my map objects (I don't know what the folder will be called in UP etc) so do a search if necessary (try searching for the name of one of the airfields)

You should find the following path    3do/Buildings/Fields/ and then folders of all the different airfields.

Open the plate.mat file in the folder of the airfield you want to edit. Use Notepad to open the .mat file

You'll find a line in the mat file like this:

  ColorScale 1.0 1.0 1.0 1.0

Change the last number to 0.6 like this:

  ColorScale 1.0 1.0 1.0 0.6

Save the mat file and then view the airfield in FMB. It should be 60% transparent and you should be able to see the plates underneath it. You can adjust that value if you need to make it more transparent but I found 0.6 a good value.

Just wanted to post a pic of Caen-Carpiquet, and give my thanks to Riptide1 who is doing an amazing job in placing new runway and taxiway plates. I'm really pleased with how these are turning out, and I think they're a big improvement over the original large plates I had before.

Decided that whilst I had the map 'open', I'd add an airfield I didn't get round to including the first time - RAF Thorney Island, a very important Coastal Command airfield. That's how it looked in 1940. It'll have runways in the late-war version.

Hi Joe!

Really glad you're coming back to look at these, they're looking great.

A small request: Rochford airfield North of Southend is currently labelled 'Rochester', could this be corrected?

Also do you have any plans to add the large crash runway at installed at Manston ca. 1943-44, or any of the ALGs that cropped up during 1943 in Kent, Sussex and the New Forest? I'll understand if not, but I kinda miss them for some pre-invasion activity!

Many thanks for producing a map that has given me and my squadmates many hours of delight, and for your continuing work to improve it!

Cheers!

Hi Fenrir,

Yes, I'll fix Rochford :)

I'm also going to be adding some of the ALGs - currently I'm planning Kingsnorth and Woodchurch, but I'm open to suggestions of a couple of other important ones.

I am also intending to add the crash runway. That opened in April 1944. I'm actually going to be splitting the 1942-1945 map into 2 maps, so in total I'll have 3 maps covering the following:

1940 - 1941 (for BoB and early Channel missions)
1942 - early 1944 - with some ALGs in the UK
June 1944 - 1945 - Crash runway at Manston and some ALGs in Normandy

Wow! Bloody hell Joe, what can I say but, amazing!

As for ALGs I'd suggest Lashenden - south of Maidstone and home to the 354th FG aka the Pioneer Mustang Group, 1st to be equipped with Merlin Mustangs.

I also have an attachment for Chailey in Sussex - a Polish wing of Spitfires was based there in the run up to D-Day and I saw Ray Hannah fly one of the most inspirational Spitfire displays there 10 years ago...

As for the Normandy ones here's a good site for you to take your pick of:

http://www3.sympatico.ca/angels_eight/alg.html

Apparently there was also a crash runway at Woodbridge near Ipswich in suffolk, built at the same time as the Manston one.

Needless these are just suggestions and I'll be happy with whatever comes. Cheers old bean!

When searching to add some good airfield on the (very) small UK part shown on the original Asheshouse map, I found a very interesting airfield Bradwell Bay (South west of Clacton on Sea) which seemed very active during WWII:
Quote
First used pre-war as a grass landing ground for the nearby air-to-ground firing range. 1940, developed as a fighter satellite landing ground.
02/41 to 11/41, Airfield rebuilt with surfaced runways and hangars added.
04/42 to 03/43, Reopened with 418 (Cananda) Sqn Bostons from Debden on intruder raids over Europe. Also used for refuelling fighters and by many other aircraft returning from operations.
09/42 to 12/42, 23 Sqn Mosquitos.
05/43 to 09/43, 29 Sqn Mosquito nightfighters.
03/43 to 05/43, 157 Sqn Mosquitos.
06/43 to 07/43, 247 Sqn Typhoons from Gravesend.
08/43 to , 56 Sqn Typhoons.
08/43 to , 198 Sqn Typhoons.
09/43 to 05/44, 488 and 605 Sqns.
04/44 to , 219 Sqn.
04/44 to 09/44, 278 Sqn Air Sea Rescue.
04/44 to 07/44, 124 Sqn Spitfires.
08/44 to 12/44, Bradwell Bay fighter Wing formed comprising 64, 126 and 611 Spitfire IX Sqns. 611 left 10/44 Wing reformed with 310, 312, 313 (Polish) Sqns, moved to Manston 2/45.
09/44 to 03/45, 501 Sqn Tempests here intercepting V-1 flying bombs.
03/45 to , 151 Sqn Mosquito nightfighters.
06/45 to 09/45, 287 Army Co-op Sqn with Beaufighter, Oxford and Spitfires, moved to West Malling.
