I need help!! ~ Problem Solved ~
« on: January 11, 2011, 10:32:19 PM »

Hi everyone, I am starting in this great skinning hobby, I am a scale modeler and now I would like to add that experience here, I use photoshop but when I get a template I open it and customize it with no problems, but later I save it as .bmp and then add it to my aircraft file, but in the game I cannot see my skin, I have seen the size must be 1mb and the one saved by my template is 3 mb.

So I need help please how to be able to save correctly a skin!!!!

Thank you all!!!!!

It must be saved as a index and a bmp. Plus if you go to YouTube and search for il2 skinning tutorials something should come up

i don't actually know how important any of this size/bright stuff really is - unless you guys are talking about default skins here - ?
i have the bright plugin, but very seldom use it, and my skin sizes vary a lot....i don't see that it has to be 1MB in size, but anyhoo....
as long as you are saving the bitmap in indexed mode, 24-bit, it should be good to go...at least, in my experience... ;)

This is how to do it without a plugin

Saving a skin in Photoshop (any version - in any flavour of Windows operating systems) screen caps from XP

IL2 can only use an image as a skin which is 1024 pixels x 1024 pixels in 8Bits/Channel Indexed colour saved as a .BMP

The only stuff you need to change is the image mode and save the file as a (Windows) bitmap (BMP) Photoshop does the rest

Check the image size by clicking "Image" on the menu bar and selecting "Image Size..." from the drop down menu

If you don't use the Bright plugin (which is only a save as routine) this is how you can do it manually

First of all save your work (so that you have always have a backup of what you've created)

With your image open go "Image" / "Mode" and select "Indexed Color"

 - you will get a dialogue box asking you if you want to "Flatten layers" click "Yes". This is followed by the Indexed Colour dialogue box - just click OK

Now go File / Save As and select BMP as the File Format

Finally click OK in the BMP Options dialogue box

At this point CLOSE YOUR IMAGE IN PHOTOSHOP AND DON'T SAVE THE CHANGES (you've already done that and you might want to work on the image some more)

Hope that's as clear as mud...

I succesfully brought 3 mb files to 1 mb one of the format required by Il2, on several occasions, including skins, by simply using IrfanView.

I want to thank PDelany for solving my "NOOBIE" skiinning problem. I posted in another thread that I could not make the cutom skin I had recieved work. Well the solution was right here. It has to be 1024 to show up. This solved MY problem Thanks! :D
