No problem mate, you explained yourself really well  ;)
The only thing is, that even if i map it in a "free place" it will always need that "free place" to be re-colored because the only space left free is not generally used by the skinners.
Here is an example with a great skin by Zargos: you can see that the only space left free is colored completely in light blue, so if you wanted a canopy in light blue it would be perfect, but it wouldn't be so if you wanted one with the right colors. You would still have to repaint that aerea in order to get the right look for the canopy.



I choosed to map the canopy where it was previously mapped because i thought it would be easier for a skinner (even a non expert one) to track down the mapping and repaint it. I personally did it so (and i'm really "exécrable" as a skinner  :-[), using paint for recoloring that aerea in order to get the right look for the canopy.
I don't know if it was the best decision (this is my first public mod, so i'm not really an expert) but it was a compromise solution between different choices. I hope you can understand me.
But i'm really glad you have some constructive criticism, because it's important for me to hear it, as it's always possible that i'm not able to notice things that for others are plain.

You gotta love the Panther really much  :D

EDIT:
Sorry i posted a modified skin. The original one was this.
@Dinosbacsi, as you can see in this skin here above, there is a white line going all around the canopy and there are also other things inside it (a green line, lot of gray space, etc.). The canopy that i've made, has a completely new shape, and there is no way, as far as i can see, to map it as the mapping for the original one was. Sorry for this.

Just one little tip: try renaming skin1o.tgb.tga to skin1o.tgb, and you should get better skin resolution similar to original.

Hi Birdman! I renamed it with the .tgb, but didn't get the better resolution. I'll have a look into that and see what i've done wrong. Thanks a lot for the tips!

I think this should be applied to 1956 cougars as well.

Considering that the Cougar we have in game is only a Panther with stretched wings and stabs, if you drop the same files that come with this mod inside the Cougar folder you should get the same result. So i think this works even for the Cougars.

BTW, anyone figure out how to get the canopy to slide?

It requires classfiles work, and i'm totally lost when it comes to that. Sorry...

I forgot to say that being this mod just a visual change, it is compatible for 4.09m too.

1956 Cougars. I don't care about franken ones. I think this should be added to cougars from upcoming 1956 pack. This mod is awesome so it shouldn't stay where it is - it should be implemented to other projects that miss it atm as well.

i'm just going to say at this point, that the 1956 project is not going to be delayed any more than it needs to, to include new things like this.
it is the beginning of the 'feature creep' scenario, and if the team were to keep adding any new 'improvements' as they appear, the community as a whole would never actually see the 1956 pack arrive.
best to leave the guys to finish the jets as they are, and we can look at adding new features in a later patch...but let's please leave the 1956 pack to be realised, without unnecessary delays.. ;)

Cougars aren't included in the 1956 project and haven't been for a while, as their flight control systems are very complex and to do them would have distracted us from the core of the pack. When 1956 is out and we have time to look at the Cougars again, this fix by RedFox will definitely be considered.
