Norway Map needs ed_map_t.tga
« on: February 18, 2011, 09:08:14 AM »

Plotting routes for ships through many of the fiords is impossible.Adding an ed_map_t.tga to the map might improve things. Any volunteers?

Sounds simple. Does anyone have the raw map-c?

ed_map_t.tga file is contained in GW-Norway-summerV21.zip package.

Thanks Uzin, I gave it a try but even with that version most of the fiords still seem to be impossible to plot ship courses on. I'm not sure whether anything can be done about this?

No. I wouldn't want to change the existing appearance of the map in that way, but at the moment ships are not able to have courses plotted close enough to the shore to enable navigation in the narrower fiords. I'm not sure that anything can  be done about that but I was wondering if by amending the ed_map_t.tga it might be possible to improve things.

since the ed_map_t is simply a copy of the map_t.tga renamed anyone can make one for any map which doesn't have one.
If ships will not pass then the land and islands are too close together....they seem to have been a bit too cautious when making the game engine and rivers and places which should be navigable are not.

I tried to increase the size of sea selection  by 5 pixels, fiulled the enlarged selection by RGB 28 and saved. The file (which should be renamed properly) is here :

https://www.mediafire.com/file/kdtl9g47k2cvkr7/ed_map_T_5pix.tga

Could anybody to trey this, please ?
It is possible to fine tune the enlargement of the sea area in order to make fiords navigable, i suppose.

In my experience increasing sea area on the ed_map_t will not work without editing the map_c too.

As an experiment I changed the ed_map_t to uniform RGB 28.
You are not able to get any closer to the coast.

Some improvement is achieved by changing the greyscale areas on map_c to black but still the narrowest parts of fiords cannot be navigated. It seems this is an issue which perhaps can only be solved by game coding.

I now have a ship successfully navigating the fiords.

On ed_map_t.tga I made the entire map RGB 0
This allows you to use a vehicle to plot a course over water.
I got the idea from a post by Checkyersix in another thread.
Save the mission, then in text editor change the vehicle for the ship you want to use.
Re-load the mission in FMB. You will see the ship correctly plotted but you are not able to move it in the FMB.
Play the mission and it all runs ok.

This indicates to me that there is nothing inherent in the game engine preventing plotting of ship routes close to the shore. It is just a glitch in the FMB programming.
I wonder if this could be changed.

The work around which I've just described is pretty straight forward to do.

This would be a fantastic development, and might hold the key to solving landing craft reaching the beach, and amphibian aircraft landing on either land or sea and running right up to the shore. This is really worth exploring, in my opinion.
