Il2 and multi screens
« on: April 19, 2011, 03:05:41 AM »

Hello there

I just wanted to  know wether Il2 could run on three screens.
Is it now possible with the latest  NVIDIA card, or shall I have to stick to AMD card ?
I was thinking of a Nvidia 580 or a 2 x  AMD 6970 .
I was hoping to offer me a new rig with the release of CoD.
By reading threads and watching videos on different forums I came to the point that I still had time to make up my mind and that I still had plenty of time left to study the best configuration that would suit my wishes.
While visiting my PC retailer I had the opportunity to watch some games running on three screens (ATI 6970 singlecard ), and I must confess it was breathtaking.
As I am still waiting for CoD to be bugfree ( and that will still take some time ... ) to buy a new rig ( based on Intel Sandy Bridge ), I have the time to explore the matter !.

Thank you for any advise you can give me .
Don't remember having read any thread here on the matter .

i stand under correction on this one, but afaik, the only card that will allow you to run 3 monitors is the Matrox TripleHead2Go card...
if there is an alternative option, i'd love to hear about it.... ;)

Hello Malone

Thanks for your answer, but I think I don't get it quite right. Do you mean that there is only one card that will allow me to play Il-2 on three screens ?
Is it slaved to Il-2 engine ?
Do you mean that AMD Eyefinity won't support Il-2 ?

Pardon me , but I am not an expert on that matter .

Thanks
Madcop ;)

madcop, i'm no real expert, either, but you will find that many modern gpu's support two monitors - i run with 2 monitors off my nvidia card.  :D
but for three monitors, there are no other cards (that i know of) that will support other than the matrox.
i don't know anything about the eyefinity, so i can't help you there.....what is it and waht does it do?  :o

Hi Malone

Eyefinity can support 3 à 6 screens and  is property of AMD and supported by the late AMD cards.
I already run two screens (different resolutions )  with my NVIDIA AGP 78OOGS but NVIDIA latest cards are limited to 2 screens .
My question was to  know wether Il2 could run on 3 screens provided I use a AMD-ATI card.?
In other words , is Il2 compoatible with Eyefinity?

As I am not an expert , I may misunderstand a lot and I wouldn't like to buy ATI just to find out that my beloved Il2 can't run on 3 screens .
You know I wouldn't like to find me in the same uncomfortable position of all these guys that rushed themselves on CoD !

Hello Carsmaster

I was just replying to Malone when your answer arrived.

Thanks a lot , I had a look at your threads. It looks like you are deeply involved in the matter !.
But all this looks like Greek to me...
Could you please answer very simply to my questions.
In all your threads I only saw NVIDIA and Direct X.
What about AMD - ATI Eyefinity ?

Thanks a lot to explain me  in easy words .

Hey Carsmaster.

Thank You for your quick answer.I understand that you are not involved with ATI cards and that so you can't answer me.

So if I buy a NVIDIA 580 you will be able to help me ...
I understand that COD is a Direct X game , so it won't work either on 3 screens , will it ?
Thank You very much.

Nvidia only support 2 screens at the same time on one GPU. To run more than 2 screens, you are going to need 2 Nvidia cards.

Ati is a different story. You could get reference PCB HD6950 2gb and flash them to HD6970 2gb, saving you about 120 dollars per 2 cards.

Hey General

Thanks for taking care of my demand.
I was  thinking about a ATI Crossfire of 6970.
What could be the equivalent  in NVIDIA SLI.

As long as Il-2 is concerned (OpenGL) are all the bad experience of ATI a thing of the past ( Perfect mode impossible ).?
The fact that CoD is Direct X based would mean that ATI should be a better choice ( DirectX and more VRAM - 2gb vs 1.5 for NVIDIA )
I always found that ATI rendering of colours are better than NVIDIA , but that NVIDIA is more up  to date when the drivers update are concerned .

What do you ; Gurus, think about that ?

Thanks
