as all these things tend to be backwards compatible it is no problem to play the older DGEN campaigns today.
Modding here only widened the plane count which you will miss in those campaigns. the functionality of DGEN itself is unmodded - so far.

I personally prefer DGEN way over DCG. as for displaying historically scripted campaigns, DGEN is better. No need to escape to DCG (which has it's own uses).
There are a lot of modded campaigns out now for DGEN, especially by Boelcke, with extended planesets. But of course you can allways play the originals.

@ Boelke, I have BoE, Ostfront and Operation Barbarossa. I wonder if O and OB are your campaigns? About BoE, is it playable on 4.101 + SAS 3 with the updates from A&A? I have been flying BoE campaigns on and off but the last few years there has been so much modding that career flying has been next to impossible while trying too keep on track with the IL2 developement! As for the time beeing I´d want to take a rest from updating mods and fly, especially a BoE campaign. So what´s best to do? Go the DCG way or, if possible BoE + updates?

Ostfront is a payware addon and OB is a scripted campaign - both not done be myself.

BOE - like all dgen and scripted campaigns - is playable with 4.101 and SAS 3, no need for DCG

If you like BOE, i recommend to give my channel front campaign a try, available here:
