Love your great work. Keep it up. I would like to retexture maps at 2048. Could you repost your tutorial. Thanks.

Great work Dave!
I'm working on a 1/1 Map (many airfields built on it are made piece at once, with many hours spent) using hystorical photos.
I find many black/white photos of some airfields, so I thought to make a plate from a picture and paste into the map as object.
Kevinp said to me you've many kowledge about this, so could you teach me how make it?
Thank you

I have a ton of information and tutorials I need to post, but I haven't had much time lately. Hopefully in about 2 weeks (not a joke), I will have time.

There are two methods you can use to create airfields. The first is by making a new custom airfield plate (somewhat complicated), and the second is by making an airfield onto a texture (less complicated in the end, but it uses up one or more texture slots for your map). This whole topic deserves it's own thread, which I can make in due time, but here are the few tutorials which I did not make:

The texture approach (can also be done to span multiple textures like in my Wake Island map)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4435031/Airfield%20Textures.pdf

The plate approach (essentially doing what the tutorials say, but on a grand scale)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4435031/Airfield%20Plate%20Tutorial.rar

The most important thing is to make sure your airfield looks good in GIMP or Photoshop before you start trying to bring it into the game as a texture or plate. If your airfield looks crappy, then there is no point in making it, right? Use lots of layers. Also, try to get a reasonably accurate idea of how big the airfield/runways are in real life before you start. It's been a while since I've made any airfields, so I'll try to put together a detailed method of how I do it when I get some free time.

***Make sure all runways have their main axis running on a 5 degree interval on the compass (i.e. a 05-185 runway or a 90-270 runway). You can check this in GIMP by using the compass tool down the centerline of the runway, or by making a rectangle selection and rotating it to the desired direction.

Thanks Dave! IMHO you and and a few other talented modders produce totally outstanding Pacific maps, which is my favourite area along with deserts. Your talent is inspiring and especially yours and SAS~Bombsaway's approach on shallow water and reefs is outstanding.  :)

Cheers
Tom

PS: I like to fly some Baa Ba Blacksheep missions, can anyone recommend which is the best map for the Slot? Thanks! :D

***THIS POST PERTAINS TO THE PLATE METHOD

Here is an early prototype of one of my airfields in GIMP. This airfield area is approximately 1600mx2000m in real life, which i split into 20 squares (4x5). In GIMP, each square is a 1024x1024px chunk of the larger 4096x5120px overall airfield "texture." In game (as well as in real life), each square comes out to be 400x400m. This size is determined once you start making the plate in GMax or 3DSMax. Theoretically, you could do higher resolution but that will create more work for you. I found that texture squares with sides in the neighborhood of 400m were of high enough resolution for my purposes. With all of the new 2048 texture stuff coming out, the sky is the limit I suppose.

Note: the picture below is simply a cut-out from an actual photo.

After re-doing this texture twice, paying careful attention to colors and details to match the map and historical photos, the end result looked like this on the map:

So if I understand correctly, you made 16 pieces by the historical picture and then, following th instruction of kevinp, you will find in the menu My Airfield Plates as plane objects in the folder 3do/airfield/MyPlates/...?

Thank you
