Hardware (disk configuration) question
« on: May 21, 2011, 03:38:26 PM »

My pc is getting old, and I am building a new one. I want to move my current harddisk (WD raptor - 10.000 rpm) to the new pc, and add a WD Caviar (1 TB) as well. I am wondering what configuration would give me the best performance when playing IL2: should I install the OS on the faster disk, and Il2 on the large disk, or the other way around?

Performance in the game is not dependant on the Hard disk.
The hard disk, even your Velociraptor is the slowest element of the Data transfer.

in short:
if you put Il-2 on the 10k RPM drive, it will load a little bit faster. (thel 0%-->100% thing)
But once it is loaded (you are in the menues or in the plane), Memory useage, GPU, CPU and Motherboard are determining the performance, and the Hard disk is not critical any more.

Thanks HundertzehnGustav. That does make sense.
As I am now experencing load times of 5 minutes and more, I will use the raptor as my dedicated IL2 drive.    :D

Im probably going to go this route myself, running IL2 from its own hard drive with a stripped down bare bones OS with no other programs running. Why not right?

That is why i am running things off 7,200 rpm hard drives, but made sure i had a decent mobo and fast memory along a correct CPU.

one of the only situations where a fast hard drive is helping things would be:

You are flying along in your Hurricane...
and the mission is written to spawn:
20 different types of German planes (heinkels, 109s, 110s, stukas, ju88, dornier, he-115....)
250 different skins, every plane its own skin
for 25 full flights, 100 planes,,,

and if the RAM is overloaded, part of it will be written back to the HDD at the same time
(the other programs that need memory, but are running in the background-photoshop, word, firefox, your favourite music player...)

Then you might have your HDD shoveling data from HDD to RAM and RAM to HDD..., wich might create Lag.

,,,so unless such things happen, the HDD speed is not an issue.

Impossible; custom mods installation. My current IL2 installation is 35 Gb.. Still runs smoothly on my 7 year old pc though, unless there are more then 40 planes in the mission, or when a village has been bombed and I look at the smoke. Only load times are an annoyance; hope to have these solved in the next weeks  :-D

I will run Windows 7 64bit on a 4GB memory, Intel quad core 2500 mhz processor, Sapphire HD 6950 1GB GDDR5 video card; Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio. I have always taken care that no crap runs in the background and will keep doing so.

I am quite confident my HDD will not be slowing me down now, after reading your explanation.     :P

*cough*
no way man...

what frequency is the Memory doing?

One thing: to take full advantage of DDR3 memory, make sure that the Mobo can handle the triple channel option (usually 3/6/9 slots for the RAM) and make sure you are running on 3 Ramstcks.

IF the mobo is fully DDR3 compatible (handbook) please add a Third, identical 2GB stick. (i ´spose you have a 2x2GB setup).

*throws beer*
have fun with that!

Hmmm..Might need to order extra memory then; I do have 2 stick of 2GB indeed. Will it make a big difference? I am already over budget as it is..   :P

18 seconds flat? Am I doing something wrong? Hoping that my new pc will manage that as well. Fingers crossed..  ;)
