Autopilot Landing
« on: July 31, 2011, 08:45:21 AM »

Gentlemen, when I play I let the autopilot land my aircraft. Never had a problem with this. With DBW this is not happening. The plane circles the airfield like normal. It lines up for the runway and just before touchdown it swoops up, levels off continues in a straight lines decends to land and swoops up. It does this until an object gets in the way and it crashes. This is happening in the Chinese korean campaign CPV and the original IJA dynamic fighter campaign.

Disable the 1.3 AI Mod - that's what causes it. It is a beta version.

I'm using the 1.2 version just now - doesn't have that problem.

with build 1.4 there is a much more advanced version of the ai mod coming, which will solve many issues.

Has anyone else had a problem if you let the ai do the take off in a QMB mission (not tried it in FMB)? It starts the engine checks the flaps etc but just sits there with the engine ticking over. If you switch back to have control the wheel brakes are set on, once released and throttled up going back to ai control it will then take off ok.

Thank you Redfox. That did indeed fix the problem. Now I get to install 1.4 and see how that is.

Another interesting quirk with the AI in build 1.3 is that the autopilot, when first engaged, chops the throttle and flies you aircraft into the ground...
To fix this you must fly to the first nav point first THEN engage autopilot - then it seems to get the idea that it should help you NOT crash...

As for landing, I have a quick tip for those who have the AI not landing problem + cant / wont get build 1.4;

1 - let the AI carry out the approach
2 - when the AI is close to the runway (lined up, flaps down), set the time acceleration to 1/4 and disengage autopilot.
3 - Then get the aircraft under control, drop the landing gear and chop the throttle
4 - Now you can either land in 1/4 time (real slow like, giving you more time to react to the aircraft movements
OR
5 - Set time to normal and land the 'plane (the AI has already lined you up, you just need a steady hand)...

I find that if you disengage the autopilot in normal time under landing approach, the subsequent jerk that the airframe makes is hard to recover from and you end up plowing a hole in the ground with your nose...

The advantage of this is that through repetition you get more used to manual landing and so no longer need the AI to do it for you at all...

Particularly if your damaged in someway; AI Autopilot decisions, engine damage and landing rarely mix well, even if 'he' does fly it the correct direction after dumping all your altitude & speed...

AI pilot landings are always achieved below player settings with its simplified AI FM. Power should be set initially after regaining player control +10 to +20 what AI had, just to give you enough power to glide instead of javelin-ing into the ground, so you can adjust trims and flaps etc for landing and get controls as you like.
