Well, I don't know why, but I was looking at my account's configurations and I was receiving only administrator's PMs. :o

The explosion or the mushroom? The explosion is short, but the mushroom (for me) lasts several minutes before it fades away...

I think it's because of the distance. After some distance, the mushroom simply disappears.
The solution is to use the Long View Distance mod from Gurner:

Then you can fly away and the mushroom will be there for 256 seconds, that is the limit from the IL-2 graphical engine.

I am trying to reduce the effect of the FAB(1000) effect contained in this mod to about half the size it is currently for a project i am working on.

I have tried adjusting different effects but cannot seem to make the orange 'fireball' effect  or the 'smoke column' that connects the mushroom cloud with the ground any smaller.

Could anyone help out at all please? any help appreciated.

You can adjust those parts of expolsion by editing FAB-1000(flare).eff and FAB-1000(column).eff

Thanks mate for the reply, i should have mentioned i tried editing those but could not seem to get the effects smaller.

FAB-1000(buff).eff  - i can edit this to make the mushroom smoke cloud smaller
FAB-1000(flare).eff  - editing this has no noticable effect on the fireball, i even set the size to 0.0 0.0, i'm not sure that it controls the fireball, it seems to affect the flash as the bomb explodes.
FAB-1000(column).eff - again with this i set size to 0.0 0.0, but no obvious change in the size of the smoke column
FAB-1000(circle) and FAB-1000(ring) seem to adjust the smoke at the base of the column.

would you be able to do me a favour and edit the effect in your game and send me a copy? At least i would be able to confirm if the effects are showing correctly if i get the same effect as you, as i said above i need the column to be thinner and the fireball smaller.

I must admit i'm no expert at editing effects, despite reading up on them most of the settings are a mystery to me, i would rather concentrate on the java.

Thanks Hangman, that would be great, really appreciate it.

If you do have luck adjusting it, could you please also let me know which FAB-1000(xxxx) file affects which bomb effect aswell mate? Some were quite obvious but as i said above some seemed to have no effect i could see.

I edited FAB-1000(column).eff and got smaller column between ground and cloud

FAB-1000(buff).eff controls the top cloud of explosion

FAB-1000(circle).eff controls effect when bomb is dropped in water

FAB-1000(column).eff column between ground and smoke cloud

FAB-1000(flare).eff controls flash when bomb explodes

FAB-1000(ring).eff controls fire which appears when bomb explode

What about making the column thinner is that possible? So the fireball is controlled by FAB-1000(ring).eff, is that correct? I'm sure I didn't see any difference when I tried to reduce this down.
