Zuti Friction Mod
« on: September 22, 2011, 02:43:55 PM »

I've been flying on DBW for a while now. One thing I have remarked is that apparently the airfields that are made to work with Zuti's Friction mod, are still very bumpy and landing and take-off don't feel as they should.

So I was wondering if Zuti Friction Mod is installed as a default mod in DBW? I haven't found any trace of it so far.

I also tried manually installing Zuti's Friction mod into the game, but the results were still the same: bumpy landings and take-offs along with some crashes ...

Is there anything I should know about this mod in DBW?

At least it is included in AI mod and I have tested that it also works in DBW 1.6 (was not working in some earlier versions). The grass airfields are intentionally bumpy, but at least I haven't broken my gear or nosed over at landing. Without AI mod active there isn't Zuti Friction mod either in DBW, but for me the stand-alone version works OK in that situation and there aren't any classfile conflicts.

what do you mean "don't feel as they should"?

In Il2 most fields are (should be) makeshift grass fields which in fact should be rather bumpy.
have you been on youtube? there is footage of planes taking of that even make severe jumps. compared to that Il2 is smooth still.

I was sort of reiterating about the landings and take offs being bumpy.

You are probably right that in real grass field take-offs there should be some bumping up and down, but it just seems to me, from memory, that in 4.09 the landings were much smoother with the friction mod. I also made many Fric Mod airfields on maps and varied the 'smoothness factor' quite a lot ...

@agracier:
What smoothong factor did you tried?
I did not observed any difference between 4.09 and 4.101 versions when using friction factor 1.6 to 1.5.
Tested about 60 airfields on my present state wip Belarusia map by take off and landing of Yak-1B.

I've made Friction airfields with factors from 1.90 to 2.65 and probably other more extremes as well ... can't remember offhand what the default factor is ... but i usually went lower, trying for a smoother landing.

Without ZUTI's friction mod, the default friction value for grass is about 3, with friction mod the suggested value is 2.25, but much lower values are usually used by other map makers, as can be seen from the table I gathered before some time:

Even more map makers used it from that time, I think.

Seems that the friction mod comes with DBW, but the friction values are changed somehow, if i understand correctly.
I have been testing my DGC campaign for Karelia map and it is really difficult to take off with BW 239 now at Frictioned airfiels..
Is there a way to adjust those fricton levels manually in DBW?
maybe a new mod for airfield values easier...
I don't have a glue how friction airfields are made, since Agracier has done those for our maps.
So this might be a stupid question to ask..
If not, it looks like we need to make airfields with plates again, which is sad....
For smaller maps it is not a biggie, but huge maps like Karelia....

Karelia map and others using friction mod work ok for me in DBW,
airfields are perfectly smooth

I just tested a half a dozen Karelia airfields,using a Buffalo MK I

I am using Zuti's latest Friction Mod and it works fine for me in DBW,
it also works in the DBW_1916 folder for the WWI maps

http://ultrapack.tuttovola.org/index.php/topic,247.0.html

That is a good news!
I will look at it as soon as possible. Also, it is possible to adjust friction values by hand. But one needs to install new version of map.
All the friction values can be found at load.ini file.
Takes some time and basic knowledge about how load.inis work.
Thanks for helping us with this.

One small thing about Karelia map:
UP and DBW uses version of actors.static file that can't show treerows with  forest =3 settings.

DBW/UP version is working OK with trees 2.
 :)
It is possible to add latest version manually, though.

Just unpack these files to  #DBW_1916/MapMods folder.

http://www.gamefront.com/files/20154746/ag_kt_Karelia_1.0.rar
or:
https://www.mediafire.com/?ddfaaqxy95odzh1
And add these lines to all.ini file, which you can find at same folder:
ag_kt_Karelia_Perfect   ag_kt_Karelia_Perfect/load.ini
ag_kt_Karelia_Perfect   ag_kt_Karelia_Perfect/load_winter.ini
ag_kt_Karelia_Perfect   ag_kt_Karelia_Perfect/load_autumn.ini
ag_kt_Karelia_Perfect   ag_kt_Karelia_Perfect/load_winter_ice.ini

It will appear as  a new map. You can still use "original" DBW or UP version of map.
Kap/Team International Brigade.
PS. There is more detailed version of this map coming. Some finnish guys are making it as correct as possible.

One thing!
The texture structure is different with DBW, so you need to add ag_textures manually to #DBW# folder too. Otherwise you get load.ini error

Who have trouble in take off have AI hotkeys installed?

It have friction integrated inside!

So maybe test it without ZUTI friction to avoid conflict!
