Seafires = Spitfires with Hooks?
« on: December 07, 2011, 10:39:33 AM »

I've been culling in the list of aircraft for my DBW 1.6 install, just to make more room for new mods. Since when it comes to performance and types and all, I am still an utter novice. So my question was, since I still have 32 Spitfires left in my install, and also 8 Seafires, are Seafires, except for their ability to land on carriers, in any way significantly different from their counterpart land-based models? Aside from naval operations based on carrier landings, is there any reason to use these instead of Spitfires?

Do they fly better or have different FM's? I've not been able to tell on my own, so I would suppose the differences to be minimal.

If they are not really different from Spitfires, then there are 8 prime candidates for disabling. Or would that not affect things much in the way of allowing more new planes?

Unless you are a stickler for historical accuracy, you can probably get rid of some of them, or all if you never fly off a RN carrier. There may be some fm differences between them and land-based Spits, but they are barely noticeable.

if you are a stickler for historical accuracy, you can probably get rid of some of them, for they all are nowhere as bugged with weight problems and engine obverheating as they where in real history (early models specially)

They are all losely based to Spit V, but they are still different enough in a way that cannot be replaced by spit Vs. For me this discussion goes nowhere, someone would think that one plane is important enough and some other not, seafires were produced in substancial numbers and even if it appears that they were not used as much in carrier operations as the british intended to, they played an important role againt italy in 1943 and then again very late in the war the L. III version (possibly the most properly navalized) against the japanese.
It's a challenge to land one in a carrier, possibly that is the best part.

Yeah, what Fanatic said- they are an important aircraft Historically if you fly those scenario's, but binning them all and just keeping MKV's isnt going to cut the mustard.

In the end, its a matter of taste......

For me to land a plane anywhere at all is an almost insurmountable challenge anyway ... ha ha.

Thanks for all the responses. At least i know I can easily leave them all out now and not be missing much in the way of loosing different flight characteristics.
