Weapon Sounds, the one-millionth
« on: December 16, 2011, 11:40:58 PM »

Hey Guys,

so i have been playing Il-2 online years ago, pretty regularly. When i played it only the first mods were out, things like flyable planes and soundmod and tracers, but that was enough for me.
Then i had to take a break, and now i tried to get into it again.
Long story short, i didnt like the ultrapack because it somehow didnt really bring new sounds and effects except for plane engines (i might have done somethign wrong)
But this mod (HSFX) really sounds and looks really, really nice, and, most important of all its online compatible with the most popular servers

So i join the fray, manage to get behind a La-5 in my beloved 109 when it hits me - Those awesome flyby sounds and engine sounsd are completely overridden by the total lack of Weapon sounds.
I mean its not BB guns in my wings, its large MGs/Autocannons.

Asking around some people set me up on this forum and tell me thers an update/Hotfix.
Sadly this hotfix (hsfxsound.sfs from the sound effecs and updates thread in the hsfx downloads section) does nothing...
Could it be my sound settings, do i have to play around with the channels and with the kHz?

Its kind of bothering me to the point of not playing. really i think this is the right mod pack for me but this issue just renders it kind of useless...

 ;)

Please help a fellow sturmoholic

You could try my sound pack for HSFX: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,16999.0.html, but it will overwrite Tiger's fly-by sounds. Since my mod is JSGME compatible, you can always disable it if doesn't "jive" for you.   :P

lol, your Sounds?
How can people praise them like this in your thread?
I mean they are very good, but the small MG17 sound HORRIBLE.
The rest is good any my flyby sounds still work.

my 2 cents

Nice one Biturbo - first posts on this forum saying one issue in HSFX renders the whole thing useless, then tell somebody that offers an alternative that his work is rubbish.
How to make friends and influence people...  ::)

So where is your all inclusive sound mod?
And what do you expect from the MG17? IT IS A SMALL GUN!  ::)

First off, i never said the mod was rubbish. I said ONE SOUND is horrible, and i explicitly stated that the rest is "very good" but that flaw is in my eyes awful.
2. So only because MG17 is a small gun it has to sound bad/have a soundfile of less quality than, say the MG FF? even the british 7,7 sound much better and theyre even smaller caliber
3. Yes, this issue made the game unplayable for me. I dont know about you but in games, movies etc the sound is not far behind the visuals in terms of importance to me
4. I am using his mod and i like it. Sorry that i am not used to overly hype things and tell things how they are.

Sorry that you come off as a classes ingrate, but alas...

It's one thing to say "is the rate of fire for your an/m2 correct, I believe it may be off"
Another to say "wow this sucks! But I still use it."
 ::)
And realistically you should be grateful to anyone who tries to mod. If not for them you'd still be playing stock 4.08.

Biturbo,

Maybe you should attempt to make your own MG17 sounds and use them! You would then see how difficult it is to get cowling guns with a high rate of fire to sound correct in this game.

The samples I used were taken from an actual MG42 firing (open them with a sound editor and see for yourself). The IL-2 sound engine uses positional audio and has a bad habit of distorting gun sounds which have a high rate of fire and are in close proximity to the pilot (i.e., MG17 behind engine). The only way to resolve this issue is to radically slow down the rpm of the guns (by altering the samples). You then have better sounding guns but with the wrong rate of fire. I chose to keep the correct rate of fire and live with the resulting distorted sounds.

New here sdo just pickin up on some of these older threads..

Not to have the 'poop' hit the 'fan blades' but I had not used either your sounds or Tigers. Now I have both?

First off...I am unsure when I would use Flyby Sounds as I am an in-the-cockpit pilot.

Second, What does have me wondering...the 2 sound packs are so different? How odd!

Which one is most historically correct?

Certainly I salute you both for a more than human effort....well Done!

Duff,

Which sound mod is more historically correct is pretty subjective. I'm guessing that neither of our sound mods simulate with high accuracy the gamut of sounds in a real WWII aircraft - the IL-2 sound engine is fairly limited in this respect. However, the engine sounds in both my mod and Tiger's mod use audio samples taken from actual aircraft of the period. The external flyby sounds in Tiger's mod are truly impressive and hard to beat! The flyby sounds in my mod are very clean and aggresive sounding but of slightly lower volume level. I have spent a HUGE amount of time tweaking gun and cannon sounds in my mod (especially the newest version I'm currently working on) and have received much positive feedback on this. Tiger's gun sounds are much quieter...both inside and outside the cockpit. I tried to strike a balance between realism and "fun factor" with my mod as IL-2 is a game after all. I don't think you can go wrong with either sound mod. Try them both (one at a time) and choose the one that sounds best to you.
