dump also has some shortcomings as the damaged layers are often not dumped I think a combination of the two methods will give the best results

Damaged layers shouldn't be an issue at all (only under very weird circumstances, if they're not part of hier.him but instead get declared dynamically in code, which should just not be the case).
Night textures for gauges are an issue, as they are being addressed in Cockpit Java code, so the dump mode can't "guess" them unless they actually get accessed.
