DBW 1.7. One last attempt - Version 2 with new air.inis
« on: December 24, 2011, 11:19:17 AM »

I start this topic as one last attempt to prevent the reduction of planes. I show in this image what I did and it worked PERFECTLY. I have different air.ini entries in my JSGME and I switch from one to the other every time I want to try a different scenario. The success of this method was absolute.

The "air_all" entry contains all the ini entries but its size is much more than the IL-2 can handle. I try it to be sure that there are no conflicts involved.

I seperated them by theater/period, so for the two "piston area" inis, there are no postwar planes, not only jets but also A-1H/J, B-26K, P2V Neptune etc. Therefore:

The "air_europe" contains everything that fought in the european continent from SCW to MTO, western and eastern europe.
The "air_pacific" has all the extra planes of the PTO/CBI, especiallly japanese. So no Fw 190A-8/9 1.65 atm, no Bf 109G-10 early, no A-20 RKKA with soviet turrets, etc. but all the B-25A/Bs, P-47Ns, Ki-10s etc.

The "air_jets" have has everything the stock UP3.0 has PLUS all the seperate install postwar planes I liked (or to be honest, had time to) download.

As you may see in the catalog, the list is quite big...many planes that are supposely "4.09 only" worked with no problems. There are very few planes that I wanted and I couldn't have it, and these involve some (very few) incompatible 4.09 mods, like e.g the F4U-1.

NOW VERSION 2

 - Air_Europe ini is now more "light". It seems that for most users it was too much for being stable enough.

 - Air_Pacific ini has a lot of new additions (thanks to MUAS & JapanCat) and although is stable as it is, I doubt if it can take future additions.

-  Air_Jets is more or less the same.

-  A new air.ini is added, called Air_SCW&NA (=spanish civil war & north africa). I had to move planes out of Air_Europe so it was the logical next step. My idea is to be "latin-centric" so I tried to keep planes like the P.24s, for helping people make missions/campaings everywhere were italians were involved. However, Bredas are still not there since they take a awful lot of virtual space, so I decided to leave them out to try to keep a more rounded up air.ini. In the near future, I intend to replace the extra IAR 80s with the SM 81.

Extra

For you people that are aware with the DZZ mods, there is an extra set of inis for using them, replacing the stock entries. More useful for campaings are DZZ Fw 190Ds and Ki-43-IIs but all are welcome. Please be aware that some loadouts (like the torpedos for the D-9s and the extra wing tanks for the Ki-43-Ia & Ib) are not historical as far as I know.

Note: By accident I left in the DZZ versions another air.ini called "med & africa" (let's say a "beta" version of the SCW&NA)

Would you be willing to offer your ini's for the community and perhaps offer a little more guidance for anyone who might wish to emulate your format.

I for one would be very grateful!

Please check. The "air_europe" is close to its limit.

You may have trouble finding all these. Some of them they simply don't exist elsewhere the way I packed them like the P-40. I cannot remember where I picked up some of them like the P-40 recco. The ones that you simply have to delete in order to run are the extra Bf 109 entries unless I sent you the extra pack.
I did a big effort to squeez down the duplicates. At one time in early november I was down to 19 entries but then since I found out that there was a loooot of room available (and no time for me to work on - we have to live real lifes you know...) it boomed up to 83 and I thought that makes no sense to work on it since with 1.7 I have to do it all over again...The important thing is that with some of these packs, like the B-25 pack and the P-40 pack for example, I did a lot to bring down the duplicates. This helped creating more space.

Be aware, that I installed EVERYTHING through JSGME and that I don't install/unistall the planes everytime I change the ini entries, I leave them there as they are.

Dear Fanatic,

Thanks!  I haven't had time to try your ini's, but I will soon.  I think the key is to have a full install of DBW 1.6 and UP RC4, but to then use the JSGME in order to actually modify the game.  Correct?

You have to add all the extra stuff through the JGSME only.  Put // infront of any plane I don't have.

And even 4.09 planes should work.  That is the goal, correct?

Cheers FANATIC MODDER. It is a solution of sorts but it does add an extra layer of complexity which isn't suitable for many user. The plane slot reduction will still go ahead for DBW 1.7. What it doesn't stop though, is for people, using a method like yours, to come back later and add in all those rarer variants to their install. We still need to have a stable pack than contains the vast majority of representative planes used in campaigns. Plus there are many duplicates that serve little purpose (e.g. same aircraft with different set of weapons) OR represent a very rare aircraft variant (e.g. Zeros which are identical except for placement of a radio aerial).

Ultimately what we want to achieve in DBW 1.7 is that it acts as if it was stock game and allow users to add any aircraft as they like. If this is achieved by removing the extra fat, then the extra fat will be removed. Oh and thanks to some clever coding by Storebror, we have increased the amount of room we have before we hit the ''Java wall"

Good to hear that last part.
I look very forward to a game with fewer spits and Yaks! :D

...(e.g. same aircraft with different set of weapons) OR represent a very rare aircraft variant (e.g. Zeros which are identical except for placement of a radio aerial).

Is this supposed to be a sort of joke in order to make a point or is this actually so? Cause if it is, please let me know which ones you're referring to so I can disable them already ... not only are there too many variants of Spits and Yaks, but also of 109's, Fw-190's, P-38's, Ju-87 ...
