Converting Il2 barges into ships.
« on: January 08, 2012, 11:09:55 AM »

We have two barges in Il2, they are static objects, we can destroy. But they are not ships that can sail trough coastal waters and rivers by themselves. So, my request, is that someone please convert the Il2 barges into real ships that can move and be sunk. Thanks.

Adding a third barge without cargo, but AAA guns will be just amazing.

Yes RD,

This is a really valuable request, and I'll raise the ante :

Is there any way to add these as ships, and then have a submenu in the ship file which includes a loadout for various cargo vessels for different cargo types :

POL (petroleum oil lubricants) , troops , vehicles , armour , guns , ammunition , dry goods , civilians

This would be immensely valuable for SEOW and for DCG, as well as for immersion for offline users - provided that vessel loadouts also had visual clues as to the cargo type.

I know it's a big implication idea, but you never know who might get interested. Regardless of the consideration of my add on, I've always wondered why these barges weren't included as ships in the first place.

Good shout both RD and Kopfdorfer :) In terms of implementation, might it also be possible to be able to have 1-3 unmotorised barges being towed behind a coastal tug? I'm away from Il2 at the moment (working at sea as it happens), but assume there's something that could be pressed into service in this role?

Hopefully these ideas pique someone's interest, it'd make such a difference to see more coastal traffic in-game. Not to mention the options it would give mission builders, and Coastal Command enthusiasts...  8)

Interesting!
I'll have to look more closely at this case ...

I will be happy If those simply behave like our actual ships, nothing more.

Hey Guys,

Here are some pics of the real things...

German Transport Barge (nice camo)

Civilian Use

Use as a River Ferry

Coal Barges

Railcars

USN Crane Barge

Chinese River Barge

Cotton Barge

as far back as Gallipoli 1917

The Winner - and indicative that IL2 NEEDS these...
Towing a Junkers!!!

Food for thought anyway...

With the magic that Epervier has been weaving lately - he will probably create a moving barge with one of his horse & wagons disembarking  8)

The problem with an object "ship" is that it takes a certain depth of water.
We'll have to cheat ... more ...
Maybe the same way that the trains on the objects "rails"!

My idea is not that complicated, but simply getting this converted into ships that can sail trough water just like e other in game ships.

RD,

I must apologize for vomiting out so much excess on top of your concise and very doable request ( which I made myself a long long time ago - I can't recall if it was here or back at AAA). I never understood why the darn things weren't included as ships in the first place.
Please forgive my exuberance - it is a good and simple (relatively) and  I believe necessary idea to be pursued.

Cheers.

Bump of curiosity as to whether anyone has had any successful developments here - and to note that now there are more barge objects to include.

Perhaps Kiwi would include a little tutorial as to how to morph objects into cars.
If he doesn't already have it in his wonderful FMB tutorials.

He actually succeeded in helping me to get ships working on the canals on the NWE map.

Thanks KiwiBiggles. That would be perfect. A good target to place on the larger inland water ways, or canals. I'd use it in missions wherever applicable.

cheers
