Airframe shake when damaged
« on: January 14, 2012, 07:40:11 PM »

I was flying along in my Mig-3 when some tool in a JU-88 put a few 8mm rounds into my motor. Instantly damaged! How rude! But I got to thinking...

Even though the engines in the game make noises telling you that they are damaged we don't get any real feedback. A 1200 horsepower motor with a blown piston, unbalanced crank or thrown rod is not going to run nice and smooth, it should probably shake the virtual fillings out of our virtual heads. In a similar manner we get airframe vibrations when gear/flaps are lowered when going too fast, would it be possible to apply that effect to engine damage and magnify it significantly?

I think it would go a long way for immersion. Imagine if you had to nurse a wounded bird home, but instead of a whimpering motor your airframe feels like its going to rattle apart!

+ 2 with enthusiasm

1.  I've read accounts of WWII engine damage that would verify your statement.

2.  The amount of shaking and vibrations that result from lowering landing gear and flaps are utterly ridiculous and need to be toned down about 90% if they are to approach realism.

I read a story about Galland, he flied from Britain to France with the landing gear down without notice it

+1 for the request

Can these vibrations cause any airframe damage in game?  The only damage I've noticed from flaps/gear vibrations is the gear itself breaking off or flaps jamming.

First time I tried the COD Spitfire out over the channel, I allowed the temperature to go too high and the engine started running very rough. I eventually had to pancake in the channel. I use the G940 with force feedback and I have to say that it was very immersive. I think they have done the damage model very well. I suppose without FFB, I wouldn't have known that. Anybody else out there have this experience with COD?

I think that big damages on the wings or on the fuselage could cause some kind of vibration too, because of the turbulence generated by the big holes.

This would definitely be a must have mod.

I'd imagine an engine with a piston shot out would shake like Godzilla's vibrator while running.

I'd like to see the vibration increased when firing guns too. My father-in-law was a USN pilot during the late 50s and flew a Skyraider. He said he felt the guns firing as much as he heard them.

The force feedback code is something that really hasn't been looked into. I'd imagine it wouldn't be too hard to tweak but considering this would only benefit a small part of the community (e.g. those with force-feedback sticks), this feature wouldn't be higher on the 'To-Do mods' list'. I'd love to see it and would try myself, but I'm already desperately short of time as it is, and that's before I put modding into the mix.

A while back I had asked about attaching forced feedback to the head shake when flying through clouds. We can see the shake in game when flying through clouds but it would be even better if we could feel it as well. I think it would be a really great addition it the FF code could be looked into.
