Fw190 D13 startup
« on: January 29, 2012, 06:53:00 AM »

Saw this on youtube, hard work for the starters !

Read a bit through the comments to know the story of this FW, really interesting  ;)

And from 4:41 on (when the engine starts) you can listen to this nice Jumo sound  8) And it's the original one it seems !

Yeah, its a beautiful sound alright. Seems that when the video was done the aircraft was missing the 'Kommandogerät', the electro mechanical computer that adjusted the ignition timing, so the engine could not rev, only idle.

Apparently, this aircraft has now been completely overhauled, and a Kommandogerät fitted.

Yes it seems so reading the comments. As always on YT some pretty rude ones there  ::)

But I'm not sure whether I'd like it to fly or not, risking that it crashes...  :-X There are so few of them  :(

:( Yes ive hunted high and low over the last years to find more footage of this engine being tested but I cannot find any  , they are saying that although the correct parts have now been found and installed this example will never be flown and there are no more plans for further engine runs , which sucks because I would love to hear what the Jumo213 sounds like at full chat and espesially since it has such a large supercharger duct.

Someone said in the comments that there are 4 (or 5) Dora's being restored, and maybe some of them will get to fly. I'm not sure though if the engines are the real one for those...

Too bad, the Dora is one of my favorite birds  :-X

The German firm FlugWerk, who build new Fw190 A8/N's and Fw190D9's from kits, use the Allison V12 in the D model:

Dont think it sounds as good if this short video is anything to go by:

As far as Im aware, there isnt a flying 190D with the original engine. Shame.

Hehe, most of the original ones were grounded all the time because of the original engines.  ;D

Nice vid, thanks for posting.

Got a source for that? I have got pretty much everything published in the last few years on the 190D and Pilots did nothing but rave about the aircraft and its engine once they flew it.

... i believe 2 Jumo 213 were recovered (here is a pic of one of these) and were planned to be used to make a working one, but no news since then ...  :'(

Yes, when they were airworthy.

How many were serviceable out of the total pool at any given time though? They had an advanced and highly complicated aircraft to maintain, in challenging conditions which was being produced by a war industry that was short on resources and largely run by slave labour.

Of course they raved about it, it's a nice plane, but how many of the 17 aircraft that were delivered actually made it off of the ground at any one time?
