Pacific Fighters...?
« on: January 29, 2012, 03:39:07 PM »

Pacific Fighters is part of the IL2 series, correct? I am wondering if there is an F8F Bearcat in PF or an add-on for the Bearcat? I know the Bearcat never actualy saw combat in WWII but I just have a craving to fly it in combat.

Okay, so I found Gerds F8F add-on and will attempt to get this mod to work in IL2. My question now is, are there any carriers or add-on carriers in IL2 1946 or do I have to have Pacific Fighters, and will Gerds F8F work in either 1946 or PF? Sorry for all the questions but I am a newb of newbs but am rapidly becoming very attached to IL2.

Well all you need is 1946, then patch it to 4.09 at least and then add a modactivator and then read tutorials on how to add planes.

Hope this helps

Okay, I have 1946 modded to 4.101 and SAS Modact 3. I tried to add the Bearcat and use the SAS Modact to start the game, but it CTDs at 70%. The installation instructions aren't real clear to me; it says to add the two lines to the air.ini file, no problem there. Then you put the Gards F8F folder in the #SAS folder. But there are three other folders in the Gards folder (Skins, Samples and Presets) that I am not sure what to do with. I tried putting the contents of these in the same folders in the main game directory and maybe that's why it CTD. The instructions don't say anything about these folders. Maybe they are suppose to stay in the main aircraft folder...? Also, it says something about using SAS's mod environment (mod activator and UI). Is that the #SAS Modact? I am just not doing well with these IL2 mods.

I am running Win 7 64 bit. IL2 1946 is version 4.101m, Modact is version 3.06. I had it working like that; the only mod I had in it that I had managed to get working was Flakitens F9F-2 Panther. It has ran fine using the Modact.
If you aren't using Modact, what are you using, HSFX?
I have one other question if I may, is there any way to change the HUD info to mph and feet for us Yanks LOL? I do okay with the altitude conversion while flying but still have issues with the airspeed in kph.

Yes I was able to delete the air.ini lines and get the game going again. The only mod that is in there is the F9F-2 and it works fine. I understand about the mod folder and the folder depth sort of; I had to figure that out to get the Panther to work. I put all mods in the #SAS folder. What is confusing me is the other folders in the Gerds F8F folder besides the 3DO folder. Do they just stay there or do they need to go somewhere else? I don't recall having those folders in the F9F install. This seems so simple; just put the main Gerds F8F folder in the #SAS folder, add two lines to the air.ini file and away you go. Apparently I am missing something though. I am really anxious to try out more of the miriad of mods available for 1946; obviously I have a thing for late 40s-early 50s Korean war era planes. I just need to figure out what I'm doing wrong on these installs. I had the same issues with the SAS IL2 1956 mod (Sabres and Panthers and MiGs, oh my!).

Well, ya can't get much simpler than that one, unfortunately it didn't work. Folder in the #SAS folder, one simple line in the air.ini file and launch it with the modact. And....70% CTD. So, it says it's a 4.10 mod. Should it work with 4.101? Also, is there any order or place in the air.ini that these lines have to be entered? I just put it in the USA section in kind of an alphabetical order, just like I did with the F9F. Is it necessary for there to be an appropriately named folder in the skins folder which is also something that was done for the F9F?
You mentioned something about the "buttons" mod and that it somehow designates the flight model. How do I know if I have that installed correctly?
Again, sorry for all the questions.

I have not mapped the speedbar but I will try that. All I need is for the HUD to show the altitude and airspeed in Imperial.

You are better to read all the documentations in SASModAct and here "SAS" How to/troubleshooting topics.

They show you many things to care in installing MOD.

When you read all of them and understand them, and do as they show, then all will go well!

hi brett - Kiwi is giving you great info here, so i won't disrupt that, but it might also be a good idea if we can see your log entries from when the game crashes, it might help us to pinpoint a particular issue. have a look at this thread if you're unsure on the error log process: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,13457.0.html

Only one line at air.ini it should look exactly the same as the other entryes, exept for the name
The modfoler in this case Bearcat must go on your MODS or #SAS Folder inside the folder it must be a 3do folder visual.

Okay Kiwi, I set my folders up exactly like yours and I still get a 70% CTD. I even tried only one line in the air.ini file; I tried the two different lines one at a time, same thing. I delete those two lines and it starts fine. So I am thinking maybe I need a fresh install or something, but the one other mod I have in there (F9F-2) works fine. So obviously I am still missing something. How is your Modact UI set up? I have mine set up with the following options:

SAS Modact 3 or later
Maximum RAM size: 1024 MB
4 GB Address Space enabled
Mod Files Cache enabled

Maybe I need to change something in there...? But here again, the other add-on works fine.

Okay I figured out how to look at my log file... sort of. I am not real sure about most of what I see there when I get a CTD, but a couple things kind of stood out towards the end of the file:

[1:55:41]   INTERNAL ERROR: Str2FloatClamp() - Clamped 120 -> 60 (delta = -60) to Range 0..60

and...

[1:55:49]   GUIQuick: class 'air.F8F2' not found
[1:55:49]   Main begin: PlMisAir: class 'air.F8F2' not found
[1:55:49]   java.lang.RuntimeException: PlMisAir: class 'air.F8F2' not found

What is this telling me? Why aren't these files being found?
