Hi Guys

Having spent my working life in the cartographic industry, I have a strong interest in the mapping side of Il-2 and have embarked on a personal project to map my local area, i.e. a section of SW England, covering East Devon and West Somerset. This will eventually include the WWII RAF airfields of: Weston Super Mare, Weston Zoyland, Merryfield, Culmhead, Upottery, Dunkeswell, Exeter and Haldon.

To date, with much appreciation to Kevin P and Boomer, without whose excellent work on creating superb tutorials, I would never have started, after two weeks of struggling and tearing my hair out in frustration, interspersed with the occasional 'light bulb' moment, I've reached the stage where I have a workable map that I can load and fly over and even recognise where I am from the shape of the landscape  Textures at the moment are either stock or 'borrowed' from other sources, e.g. 352nd's excellent Channel map, however I aim to produce my own over time.

So far, so good, but I'm now at the stage where I cannot find the answers to certain questions, either in the tutorials or from extensive googling and reading posts on the various forums (although I've learned a lot from doing so  ) ...... so, I thought I'd join up here and start pestering you guys with my questions  ..... then I came across the first hurdle, i.e. where is the best place to post to discuss the finer points of map construction? My first thought was the 'MapWorx' section, but I see that's a closed shop; so where should I post, please?

PS - edited to add: I'll be happy to make this map available to anyone else who might be interested in flying over this corner of England, once it reaches a stage that I'm satisfied with.

Map works - Map Tutorials might be suitable. If not, admins will redirect your post into the proper place, I hope.

Hello tabbycat, as a new member I think you should post your map making questions here in this thread, shouldn't do any harm here.  This area is for those new to SAS who ask questions most have heard countless times before.

This is the most sympathetic area in the site, what may be considered silly or annoying questions elsewhere on the site, no problem, hopefully someone will guide you in the right direction.  

Unfortunately to post new threads in the maps area you usually need to have the admins give you access, if you have that you could post your map as a WIP, (Work in Progress), and ask questions as you build your map.

Maybe a PM to Cirx, or any other admin could clarify things for you there.  I would think you should be able to PM them as a member.

Failing all that, check through the ETO map threads, or all map threads, whatever you need to ask has more than likely been asked before somewhere, you may have to do a lot of reading though.  Stock up the fridge with beer and make a couple of hours spare and all should be come clear.

Oh, and welcome to SAS.

Thanks, Pete .... good idea, I'll try a PM to an admin ....... and in the meantime, as you suggested, I'll post my first question in this section ...... but I'll start a new thread for it.

Tabbycat you really hit the key in here, we like to hear about people so dedicated doing an effort learning, so they rip there hear off. Welcome to the site. I am sure if you stick with us that we will enjoy a lot of stuff made by you. Hang in there, you will expirience a lot of grateful members
