Yeah, too bad. Because the new maps you guys are making as close to or at FS quality. If the mountains could be made to FS standards it would be quite something.

The mountains in Il-2 has to do with map_h - it is gray scale and therefore has 256 rgb values. Each rgb value corresponds to a particular elevation. The most obvious value 0 being 0-5 meters of land elevation or something in that order - more or less.

But the scale is not linear, it is exponential, with each additionally higher rgb value corresponding to more meters in height. Meaning that while rgb 0 may show 5m of elevation difference between itself and rgb 1, by the time you get to rgb 240, the height differences are far higher by factors of 10 or more. So that the difference between rgb 240 and 241 may be more than 50 m ...

With certain landscape types at certain elevations, this causes the map to render some very unrealistic elevations and landscape configurations ... sometimes the landscape looks like a layer of whipped cream for instance, or like a stepped pyramid ...

All quite a shame ... so you need to choose land areas for making maps carefully.

Hi Boomer,

I too made some just for fun rough maps.

mainly

Canada British Columbia west coast to Seattle (mainly thinking of the RCAF in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island)

Great Lakes region ( bit boring very flat )

Also a couple of Polar area maps for Cold War

Just for fun and still very rough.

In my opinion, a nice map will be around chicago with main cities.

1) With the lake Michigan, you can train to land on carriers (a Hellcat or Wildcat was found this last two years) next to Chicago
2) With main cities, you can use C-47 for the transport of passengers around the city
3) For a "what if" context, it could be a rendez-vous point for german and japanese forces, fighting together against American forces.

Here is a basic map of the area around Pensacola I once made for someone. It's not finished nor can I finish ... but should anyone wish, take it and do whatever you wish with it ... there are 2 versions.

Hey North American map fans

Any interest in this particular map?

The coast of British Columbia and Seattle

Could be used for W.W 2 and Cold War.

A lot of mountain flying training and later all weather training.

There are a number of RCAF Station locations on this map including Seattle USAF, and Air National Guard.

We have most of the aircraft Tigermoths, hurricanes, P-40 N,Spitfires, Mosquito's  to  Cold War Lancasters, Neptunes, T-33's and Sabres. (Golden Hawks)

Also beginnings of the famous Abbortsford Airshow.

only one lacking is the CF-100

Also I'm interested to attempt a first  winter map have a break from the pacific.

cool Sasquatch country.  :D

I'm originally from Calgary but lived mostly in Vancouver.

Any canadians out there in SAS world desiring this map.  ;)

Cheers

Though I am contradicting what I have often done on maps myself, it seems better to keep the map areas smaller, rather than larger. And since the interior of the larger map would be very mountainous, avoiding such areas on a map might also be better, as some mountainous areas tend to look so odd given the way that rgb value increases are translated into exponentially larger and larger height increases as you go up the scale ...

I think an NAS Pensacola map would be appropriate.

Agracier posted a Penisicola map somewhere already  :)
or at least I am pretty sure anyway  :D

not sure where but I did see it recently,
a somewhat bare basic map I think but there is actually two maps of the area
one version is textured a bit more than the other

You're right about that. Here's a link:

But do be warned that as maps go it is not all that good.
