I see  ??? In my version of the SAS mod activator I have this option, (I checked out before giving advice and couldn't remember that it was just my personal tweak) so I just assumed that everybody does ;D

I'm running IL2 in both Win7 and Wine. HSFX 4.11 was working fine in both but the same installation of HSFX 5.0.1 that runs in Win7 fails in Wine. I have updated buttons to 8.4 but I still get a 60% crash with:
Code: [Select]
[7:44:22] java.lang.NullPointerException
[7:44:22] at com.maddox.il2.gui.GUIQuick$ItemAir.<init>(GUIQuick.java:719)
[7:44:22] at com.maddox.il2.gui.GUIQuick.fillArrayPlanes(GUIQuick.java:1627)
[7:44:22] at com.maddox.il2.gui.GUIQuick.<init>(GUIQuick.java:1731)
[7:44:22] at com.maddox.il2.gui.GUI.create(GUI.java:158)
[7:44:22] at com.maddox.il2.game.Main3D.beginApp(Main3D.java:701)
[7:44:22] at com.maddox.il2.game.Main3D.beginApp(Main3D.java:358)
[7:44:22] at com.maddox.il2.game.MainWin3D.beginApp(MainWin3D.java:211)
[7:44:22] at com.maddox.il2.game.Main.exec(Main.java:420)
[7:44:22] at com.maddox.il2.game.GameWin3D.main(GameWin3D.java:235)

Previously I had a 60% crash with HSFX 4.11 too, but updating buttons was all what was needed. If MODS is present it always lists the first plane in air.ini before this exception. Has anyone experienced similar problems with Wine?

Guys I really don't get it working  :(
I was so confused about all the different problems that I decided to completely reinstall my game. I did it now. After every patch being installed I checked it if it works. No problem, 4.101 works. Then I installed the modact (downloaded it again). But now it doesn't start up at all !
I don't know if it matters, but in my main folder i have to il2fb.exe, but both 156 Kb, no 4,442 Kb one how you said Frankiek.
Hmm...I don't think that it's a problem, but I have some campaigns and the IL2 Shturmovik Stab from M4T, is it possible that they are not compatible with modact ?
Please help me, i would like it so much to finally get it working !  :-\

First, make sure you have the right modact for 4.101 there. It is currently modact 2.72. (this one: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,13832.0.html )

then, open your main IL2 game installation.

First we have to get your stock game back and working again.

So, open you main game folder.

I want you to completely DELETE the following things in there:

the whole "MODS" folder
the whole "FILES" folder
all the .exe files that are called " il2fb.exe", not other exe files should be deleted.
the whole "jsgmemods" folder

dont second guess me on any of this, just completely delete them all.
Also, delete any shortcuts to the IL2fb.exe you may have made to put on your desktop or so.

The, go to THIS topic, and download 7zip. https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,2123.0.html
install it (if you havent already). Use only 7zip to open 7z files, such as the one the modact comes in. Some will tell you that other unzippers will do the job just as well, but they dont hang around our tech help section so much.

Now, go to this topic:
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,1117.0.html
And download the il2fb.exe that is downloadable there. Use 7zip to open it, and put the il2fb.exe in your main game folder. It is about 4.3 mb or so big. Now, click on it to launch your game. If you had a working 4.101 previously, and you followed my steps above, then your game should start up. If it doesnt, it is because you have deleted sometheing else.

But lets assume it starts up. If it does, shut it down again.

Firstly, take the ENTIRE IL2 installation folder, (I think it is called something like "IL2 1946 Sturmovik" or something,) and COPY AND PASTE the whole thing to somewhere else on your PC. This is so you have a backup. you dont need the CD to play the game anymore anyway, you can copy and paste as many installations as you like.

Then, take the downloaded modact 2.72, and use 7zip to unzip it to some folder where it is alone. If your download is corrupt, 7zip wont open it at all.
So, unzip the download. Inside, you will find exactly 11 items.

a folder called "DGen"
a folder called "FILES"
a folder called "jsgmemods"
a folder called "MODS"
an exe Called Il2fb.exe
an exe Called JSGME.exe
a dll file called wrapper.dll
an INI file called JSGME.ini
an SFS file called SASBasic27.sfs
an SFS file called SASSound01.sfs
a file called Readme SAS Modact 2.7.txt

if you have anything else, or anything less, then you either did not use 7zip, or is not PC savvy enough to own a pc anyway.

Now, select ALL 11 items. COPY and PASTE them into your IL2 sturmovik installation folder. (the one where the il2fb.exe is)

When your pc tells you that you will overwrite files, say yes, overwrite them. If you miss any part of the modact, you are stuffed. make sure you copy all 11 items in.

then after that is finished, click on your il2fb.exe to launch the game (this will now be the new one that came WITH the modact, about 150KB or so big), to launch the game. IF you did everything exaclty as I said, it will start. If you negleted any step, or tried to keep some old mods or files, or decided for yourself to leave out pieces of the modact, then it will not start.

Beware iof you have a nanny PC, that hides files. IF you copy and paste and your PC tells you there are hidden files that it is not copying, you better make them visible and copy them. Il2 has some odd files in, and it is possible that something could have gotten missed.

IF you struggle with that, the physically drag and drop the files into the game folder.

Follow the steps and let me know how it goes.

Okay. One by one.
I verified, it is Modact 2.72. All the things you said are deleted (FILES is pretty big). Shortcuts are deleted.
7zip downloaded and installed. The new il2fb.exe put into main folder.
Now starting...and it works. Puh.
Okay, now, modact unzipped, all 11 items there and copied and pasted in il2 main folder.
Now the big moment, will it work or not ? YEESS !! Finally, I got it !
Thank you so much CirX, I'm so happy to have it working now !

Glad you got it sorted  :)

Sorry about the process, but I thought it would probably be unproductive to go bug hunting in detail, so we just hit it with "the Sledgehammer".

I should perhaps put this process into a sticky, for those at the end of their tether.

Oh the process was okay, i mean all the things i tried out to get it would probably have made it difficult to go bug hunting as you say it :)

Hi again.
I have another problem now  :(
I wanted to install the jet era now, but i can't add the air.ini, plane.ru and weapons.ru lines. I have searched about this problem, but found only one who had this problem, and that was because his game was a downloaded version, but mine is from cd.
Here is what it said :
Cannot create the C:/Program Files/Ubisoft/IL-2 Sturmovik 1946/MODS/STD/com/maddox/il2/objects/air.ini file.
Make sure that the path and file name are correct.

Hello, guys

This is my first post as I spend most of my time lurking and reading, but for the first time EVER, after years of playing this game, I've hit a snag that I haven't been able to resolve myself. Frankly, it's baffling.

It seems similar to the above mentioned "crash at 20%" but there are differences, so I wanted to make sure this wasn't something else before going through the lengthy process described earlier.

Now, the details. I'm running a fairly recent installation of IL-2 using 4.101 and Mod Activator 2.7. I do have a few mods installed, but not very many. The game has worked flawlessly and I haven't had any issues with the mods I've installed.

Then I tried installing the West Front beta maps. The thing is, the maps were designed to be used with JSGME, so it was a simple matter of dropping the maps and airstrip texture folders into the jsgmemods folder and then activating them, which I did.

Ever since I did that, the game crashes somewhere between 15% and 20%. I say "between" because it seems variable. Sometimes it crashes at 15%, 16% and even 20% depending on which mods I have disabled. It never goes beyond 20%. The crash itself is strange since, normally, the game just closes. In this case, the loading screen turns white and the game stops responding. If it makes it to 20%, the loading screen doesn't change, but it'll hang on 20% until, again, the game goes unresponsive.

I disabled the map and the texture in JSGME but it still crashes. I deleted the files completely, but it still crashes. If I disable the entire MODS folder, the game runs fine, both stock and with the mod activator. Now, I was under the assumption that activating a mod via JSGME wouldn't overwrite files without warning since that would make it impossible to completely uninstall it, nor were there any warnings about an overwrite on the main page of the map. Yet somehow, installing the Western Front map has screwed up something in my MODS folder - yet I've gone through and disabled each MOD and it still crashes.

I know all the MODs work because they worked before I installed the map, so with the map gone, I would think the game would work again unless, somehow, a map mod screwed up an aircraft or ship mod by overwriting or deleting a file. Yet I can't figure out which aircraft mod.

75% crash fix should be the same as a 60% fix, just happened more slowly - so counter got to 75 instead. Relax, calm down. have a smoke and/or a beer - tis Good Friday, - and reread tutorials/guide linked on 1st postings page.

If in doubt. re-paste backup STD folder to Mods, and seperatly paste the required details or air, weapon and plane/ship etc into their correct '.ini' file and save each one.

Oh check that your your IL2 Folder location is Not Set to (via properties) to Read Only.
