Is 3D Studio Max 2012 okay for modding in IL-2?

Hi all,

I've finally decided to break the "cone of silence." Yes, it is true that i am a newb -- in a modding sense. I've been playing IL-2 since 2008, and freely downloaded and used mods here and there. After a wee-bit of consideration, I finally decided that want to give back to the community by learning to be a modder. I recently got a hold of the student version for 3D Studio Max 2012.

Before I continue with my journey, I humbly ask if 3D Studio Max 2012 is okay for modding purposes. The IL-2 modding bible said that I needed 3D Studio Max 5, 6, 7. But I have been having trouble locating a copy, and instead opted for the student version for the 2012 edition. Of course, I try making myself less of a burden by reading all the tutorials that have been posted before asking dumb questions. This time, I could not find an answer.


There...I am finally glad I got this off my chest. Please, be gentle...I still have a long way to go  :)

Yes in-fact it is probably far better! You can however, only use Maraz' exporting tool in 3ds max 9, but you don't nessacarily need it and can use the 3ds max hierarchy system and export with the Buggy Buggy tool just fine in newer versions of max.  :)
