Bakelit kept running commonly known in 40s as well, after the war production got temp cutted, by Russians here in Buna/Schkopau-"Plaste und Elaste aus Schkopau". But when they rebuilt it, it was there again. GDR people sarcastikally joked on it, as well with other products that went back into production like "IGELIT". Here too, a smooth-PVC from Adi, that was back in the stores, causing cheesefoots and other mental illnesses (allergies, cancer).
For the old Generation, like my grandma these products were all leftovers from the war times (IG-Farben=BUNA), she hated this stuff and was quite happy when the new plastics came up.
Some quality products even remained in Bakelit. In the late 50s/60s new plastics entered wider production at Buna/Bitterfeld, more fancy and reliable, with better characteristics, replacing all the antiquated IG-Farben stuff.
Don't laugh, but our fuse-station in our flat is from good ol Buna-Bakelit. A red-brown sparkled limited edition, uggh, you must keep it as a sign of backwardness.
BAKELIT, IGELIT, BUNA-Rubber, just follow the inventions of wartime IG.Farben, they were produced under a certain name in the East as well (Buna & Bitterfeld), way well into the 50s but to the people they remained in their languague, though IG.Farben forbade the East to use their Trademarks.
