Water level problem?
« on: April 05, 2012, 08:56:08 AM »

I am messing about with sputnikshocks nachtjagd map, changing textures, adding more waterways and buildings and such, when i have just noticed a strange effect. I also tested the default map and it is the same there.

The problem is that the actual surface of the water seems to be higher than the visual surface, with the actual surface lining up with the land level. Here are a few pictures explaining

the first was taken at ground level looking at the front of the ship

the second is from the rear of the ship, again at actual 'ground' level. You can clearly see the problem

and the last is from the side

I have tried the coast align tool on map_c and map_h, but with no difference to the viewed map.

any suggestions as to what may be happening please, and how to fix it?

regards

I have seen this before when testing some shallows textures for a map Agracier was making. Contact him if no one else answers. I'm sure he can tell you.

Yea, all water surfaces have to be at zero level (it corresponds to black in map_h IIRC) bc the way 1C made the water effects is nuts... Otherwise you can try to make shallow water here - make river gray in map_c.

Bombsaway,Boomer,Agracier and mati.

Thanks all for your replies, it was indeed the map_h file, it was set to 13 instead of 0, did not think of that as it is the default map_h that came with the map so must have always been this way. Everything looks fine now i think  ;)

one more question if you do not mind please, i am trying to set up some areas of shallow water on my map_c, i have read that a value of about 90 should do this, i tried and it does not show.

I then created a greyscale gradient along a rectangle i had created in a patch of water, this is the result

The rectangle was about twice the length seen here, going roughly as far as the cursor. The shallows is only a narrow band just left of the centre 582.0 mark, is this all you would expect to get? i was expecting a wider range for the shallows?

Also the colour seen in the shallows is that of the water 2 texture, is that correct?

What are the values for start to finish of water shallows please?

thanks again all for your support and help

Thanks again Boomer,

Think i have it, just one thing to clear up, forgive me i'm new to this. The map_c needs to be saved as greyscale, correct? So are you saying to convert it to RGB for editing, then convert it back to greyscale before recompiling it for game use?

I have not been doing this at present, i have left it in greyscale for all editing.

Thanks again mate for any help, its quite a steep but enjoyable learning curve as well as trying to use Gimp for the first time, but i feel i am getting there.
