After installing IL2-1946  which I received from Amazon this morning, I find my monitor screen resolution, which is 1440 x 900 by default  is altered by IL2 to 1280 x 960. This leaves the left 3rd of my screen black and the game is off-centred, making the right side inaccessible.
I have no Mods or UP's installed just the game direct from the DVD disk

How can I adjust the game resolution to fit screen size. ?? My GPU is 512mb -  Nvidea 9500GS (MSI)
I am a complete Newbie to combat simming and would very much appreciate any help you can offer.

check out your game folder: in c/program files/Ubisoft/1946 i think it is by default.
In there you have a conf.ini file,
open that thing up in notepad and have a look around if you can not find a solution , say, among the top twenty lines of text

and remember where that file is - you might need to go back a time or two or three...

I changed the conf.file to read 1440 x 900 as you suggested and the game runs fine.
