'Real' Napalm
« on: April 22, 2012, 11:10:25 AM »

This is a little mod I whipped together that I'd like to share with the community :)

It always bothered me that the 'napalm' in the game was really just a different kind of bomb with a nice special effect attached.

This will turn the in-game Napalm bombs (75Gal, 110Gal, 154Gal, and Blu-2) into 'real' napalm bombs. On impact, these bombs will release a fan of flames that will destroy units in their path. The speed and angle of impact will effect how far the napalm spills, so low, level approaches are best.

Installation: Just unzip it in your "mods" folder.

Thanks to:

Beo, wasted, s3, ton414, OC-Tiger and DM for help testing.

Enjoy,

Hi Six. I tried this in my 4.09 UP2.01 but I think the Holygrail effects must conflict with it but hey, it looks really cool. Glad to see your still making mods. I had been away for seven months so I didnt really know who was still around. Good to see you. :)

Cool! could you make, as a next step, a real phosphorus bomb explosive? - the greenish thing in the game has no relation at all with phosphorus explosion.

great!
stock bombs in IL2 now destroy instantly everything in their "area of effect". it is possible to model shockwave that is doing damage as it travels ?  :o

Fantastic work as always Checkyersix :) Always thought that napalm in game was a bit of a lame duck, but this residual area effect is great.

found a small bug. M-13s now use the old napalm effect.

Thanks mojojojo, but this mod only changes the napalm bombs (it actually turns them into a kind of cluster bomb). The default napalm effect will still be the same.

BTW, did the M13 actually have a "napalm-like" effect in real life? I'm not sure how that would work on a rocket...

CY6

Love this mod mate, very good effects. One small thing though would it be possible for the napalm to have more volume? especially vertically? looks a little bit flat to me. Also for the fire to rise into a fireball effect if possible? A few images here to show what i mean.

just a few suggestions mate, not critical by any means

regards

So can somebody enlighten a noob on what loadout I would use to test my Napalm install.  I tried a QuickMission with an F-4 Phantom and when I got to the loadout selection I was basically lost.  Wikipedia gave me the whole history of napalm, but not what the name of the bombs were.  Another Google entry mentions Mark 77, which wasn't in the loadout drop down box.

So I started a spreadsheet of all the loadouts available for the F-4 and what they were.  I ended up with 2 that I can't find descriptions for and one that leaves me confused.  I couldn't find out what the DT, nor the DT_P3 were.  And the SUU left me confused.  It appears to be a generic sub munitions dispenser that can be loaded with all sorts of stuff; mines, bomblets, etc.

Please enlighten me.

Thanks.

DT means droptank, or a detachable fuel tank, and the SUU is the SUU-16, a 20mm minigun pod.

Thanks Mojojo.  DT makes perfect sense now  :P.  I should have realized that.  :-[

I DID see an entry somewhere that mentioned that SUU units were used to disperse mines (I think the reference was to the Vietnam War) amongst other thing, but in this case, you are saying it is just a gun pod?  So there are mini-guns, PL-20s, SUUs, and gun pods; all birds of a feather, but different.  OK.

I appreciate the information/education and I don't mean to sound harsh, however, my main question was not answered.  Perhaps you did not know the answer to my question?  What loadout do I use to test the napalm mod.  Perhaps it is not for the F-4, but for some other plane?

Thanks.
