G3M1 Type 11 Scratchbuild WIP
« on: July 01, 2012, 10:47:45 AM »

Here are some (poorly lit!) screens of the basic LOD0 model for the G3M1 Type 11 - apologies, as I promised something quite a while ago, but life is batsh!t crazy at the moment and I'm run off me feet...

This is the first model I've really got anywhere near finished, so I'm still on a big old learning curve - the next stage is gonna be a brutal optimisation as the model is approx 15,000 polys! I'll be getting rid of the separate engines, replacing the wheels Torus's with something simpler and maybe remaking some parts. The turrets alone make up 7000 polys of that 15,000!!!! Zoiks. There are also some little details still to make.

The large, distinctive wing fillets of the Type 11 were an absolute bitch - I tried multiple different methods and I'm still not overly happy with them. The Type 23 (the later, much better known model) has a much simpler fillet which is thankfully alot easier to model.

Once this basic model is optimised, I'll roll back and make the L3Y-1 transport, then make the new parts for the Type 23 (20mm & rear turret, new aft fuselage & wing roots, new cowling filters, prop spinners, slightly modified canopy), make the full range of munitions with thier various different bomb carriages, then start thinking about the really hard stuff - UV mapping, LODs, importing etc etc. Respect to all modders! That sh!t is hard!

Cheers

Ted

Hi, TedStryker. I'd like to see it in the game. I'll do a single mission for the two bomber variants when they arrive. From memory, these were used a lot in China weren't they?

cheers

The G3M saw extensive use in the Sino Japanese War, but was also used through out the whole Pacific War. Its best show it performed while sinking the Prince of Wales, the pride of the Royal Navy. ;)

Looks as if another of those REALLY missing IL-2 aircraft eventually will appear!

A very welcome project that will be VERY usable!!! Keep it up!  ;)

Really really delighted to see this project TedS.
G3M is one of the much reduced number of  really historically significant aircraft still unrepresented.
Best of luck getting those polys reduced and this Nell into the air.
