Agracier's Djibouti tribute/mod
« on: September 14, 2012, 01:51:48 PM »

As with my Sidi Ifni modern mod, 95-99% of the map work was done by agracier, so he is to be credited.

(easy Quicks to get started)

Trees by Uufflakke (needed)
https://www.mediafire.com/?2eoy1sdqm382m7p

Quoting the readme:

A mod for agracier's Djibouti map.

-Recolourization, (+Bumpfiles and indexed,) lake Assal edit, national forest edits, water colour edit, airbase added/replaced. 3 Quicks in download as well, where the Scramble is my fav.

In "_Tex/ag/Djibouti_2", I left additional textures as options for simflyers in:
-BA_Shallows_DeadCoral_F.tga, a less yellow version of the default shallow tex by SAS~Bombsaway.
To use, mark the active shallow with two "--" and mark the backup as "BA_Shallows_DeadCoral_F.tga"-without the minus in front.

Same goes for the lake Assal whitish/red recoloured tex named "Spain_Canarias_Red_13_2_Fields.tga".
I kept two backup tex of the latter in the beforementioned ag tex folder which are slightly less bright.

Changes include different water colour based on excessive research, new shallow tex, recolourized textures, scrub forest animations at the "Parc National de la ForĂȘt du Day"...the only forest in Djibouti.
I slightly enlarged its area, looks really cute ingame.
Also excessively researched on lake Assal and gave the lake an extra "whiter" tex on the west and north segments of its coast plus added additional RBG values on the map_c to allow for shallows. This included edits on map_t with a water=3 value of RGB=31.
Ideally, the colour would be different, depending on the sources used, but within IL-2's tex slot limitations that's the best I could do without spoiling the coast shallows and water colour.
BTW: I found out you can use an additional slot on Water=1, that one is not needed for perfect game settings AFAIK.

Also added ONE more modern airbase, replacing the Djibouti city Camp Lamonier airbase.
Aim is to have one starting point for upcoming new jets of SAS/AMT and HistoMod.

Hope I did not fork the rest, ...enjoy.

Big thank you for permission to mod your maps!

For bug reports and feedback, fire away  :( , it was the first time I edited map_c and map_t with gimp so I hope it's ok.
Known issue:
Lake Assal's shallows textures look weird when far away and closing in from eastern mountains. But the view from closer in compensates for that, also from west or south I could not see it, maybe dependant on angle of sun.

Cheers,

Tom B.
~
PS:
The new airbase south of Djibouti city to replace the original one as a jet capable one was copied and almost pasted from the Dixiecapt SOUTH VIETNAM 1968 MAP-so tribute for that to SAS~Mission_bug and Dixiecapt!
That base, however, tends to look different in my 4.09m HistoMod install compared to DBW for unknown reasons, so for all who experience issues or want to revert to the stock Djibouti city airbase, insert these files into your map folder:
https://www.mediafire.com/?mifjnq83xm3l7fp
~

I wait for bugs or feedback and may add minor fixes.

Screens:

Lake Assal with compromise between very bright colour salty tex and playability.
Sattelite

Added shallows and freed an extra slot for recoloured sourrounding agracier tex

(colour and type of shallow different now)

..
Airbase in reallife slightly offset to ingame posit..

Ingame

Recommended: Fly at noon or morning, naturally these textures, also in the original, look best at transition daytimes or before and after high noon. Also set landgeometry=3, looks great from alt.

PS:
I will be out now and also test my uploads again, if someone plays on the map and has bugs or feedback, I may fix stuff soon.

Cheers and thanks again to master agracier!

WOW Thorston. Great work. Looks like you've mastered map_c and a lot faster than I did. Yeah you suck. :) I hate when people are smarter than me. :) Great looking map and I cant wait for a day off to check it out. Thanks.

How would I add this to DBW?

Because DBW already has a version of this map but I don't like that version, and I would like to have a version thats jet capable.

Bombs:
Mark, don't be upset. :D It was a PITA to get there and I can hopefully now help you with all questions there. A bit counterintuitive that stuff but all doable.
Wish we had an SAS Teamspeak channel.  ;D

The_Alaska_Man:

If you do not have such a folder, create:
#DBW/MapMods/maps.
In that one put the folders of my mod and add an all.ini into that maps folder, if you do not have the DBW one, I can upload mine, contains IIRC all stock DBW map entries plus a few of mine.

Or: Simply put the download into your "maps" folder if you have one and if there is another Djibouti map folder, deactivate that one with an "-".
Allow tex to be overwritten, if asked.

Tom.

PS: That's nothing compared to the Ifni mod I posted in ag's Ifni thread, just tested the 'alternate textures' of the latter and man...hate to say it...it rocks, looks so close to the video I took as template.  :-[ :P
Self praise sucks and thus I add agracier here and Uufflakke are the men, what these gents pulled off in desert maps blows my mind.
I want Uufflakke back in the forum!! Non gay  :-* to him.  :(
Bombs:
The reason you did not yet fully manage map c is you would make all the map guys look too old once you were fully unleashed...I mean, just check your textures...makes us normal beings feel small.

Hi Thorsten,

Love the pic with the P-39 racer in it.

It shows a really interesting landscape  ;D

You've done some great work tweeking an exsisting map  ;D :D

It could be used for almost any desert scenario.

Do you have any oil installations on the map?

Once again Thorsten, you've done a really good job   :D ;)

Ah thank you Kirby! :D
Not so far regarding oil installations unless agracier placed some, but I could do that.
 :)
Was lazy last night, want to do a minor fix for the airbase.
