Map of Spanish Morocco
« on: September 26, 2012, 03:41:03 PM »

OK ... this may be the 4 or 5th attempt I've done to get a decent looking map of the Spanish Protectorate of Morocco up and working past the basic texturing phase. And I think I've finally gotten there. I've wanted to do such a map from the very first but there were always problems with not enough texture slots. So for this one I just reduced the map area ... it now has a smaller area, but the textures will at least not clash due to not enough slots.

Now the popping starts. Not that bad to do. Though the larger towns/cites like Tangiers, Ceuta and Mellia will be more work. Luckily I have some very good maps of the fortifications around Mellia, and good aerial photos of army encampments.

One problem possibly - info on air bases. Where were they? I only know of Nador and a sea plane base near Mellia. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a screen shot of the ed-Map

The first airdromes were installed in 1913 in Tetuan, Larache and Melilla. Next one was Cabo Juby (out of the map).

I guess you already have this:

Great and imprescindible map. If you included Gibraltar, could be even more useful for SCW and WWII.

I didn't have those articles yet so many many thanks. That is what I need to be able to place aerodromes in a halfway decent historical fashion ... very very useful.

On Gibraltar - I purposely left it out of the map area because it would mean yet more texture types, and a whole lot of populating on a dense urban area and military docks, installations and what not ... I like to keep dense urban areas off the maps as much as possible. They take up a lot of time to populate since auto-popping doesn't work well on cities ... and they are frs killers anyway and I tend to avoid flying over them just because of that ... a shame, but that's how it goes with Il-2.

Anyway ... this is just what I need ... I have enough photos of the towns and forts and army camps. It should be a nice mixture of European objects in the big towns along with Mahgreb elements ... hope it all comes together ...

+1!

BTW I freed one slot by using water=1 in one modded attempt of one of your maps.
Seems for Open GL Hardwareshaders=1, the water=1 slot is free.
Sorry if I tell you BS or stuff you knew since the Renaissance.. :)

I just mainly fiddle around with things, read posts and try and remember the tips ... you can't make maps on your lonesome own. All help, tips and pointers are always more than useful ... thanks.

Here's an interesting article on amphibious operations.

http://www.mca-marines.org/gazette/alhucemas

It has to do with the landings at Alhucemas in 1925, in then Spanish Morocco. This is something that will be included in this map ...

Maybe it's time to show some screenshots. These are of inhabited areas, like Tangiers, Ceuta, Nador, Alhucemas, some hillside villages, an army camp at Monte Arruit ... many of the village/town templates are based on those Uffalkke so competently and eye-catchingly designed for Ifni and a few are also from Redko's MTO map, but they've been sort of been taken apart and juggled and reassembled to make each village or town look somewhat different from each other.

Spanish Morocco is also an interesting area to do, as prior to WWII a large proportion of architecture and building was more in the Mediterranean style instead of the more distinct traditional native Maghreb style. Or often one would find mixes of both in the larger towns. Most large cities also boasted churches and European boulevards, or what passed for them anyway. Places like Melillia were also protected by a series of forts, defensive towers and garrisons. These all make for an interesting element in the map. Ceuta, the other half of the Pillars of Hercules facing Gibraltar also has many medieval architectural elements and has a small waterway connecting the port on the Atlantic side, with the Mediterranean sea. There are also a few open air mines, and some lengths of railroads. The Rif tribesmen also put up trench defenses in the best Great War imitation tradition at likely landing beaches - wrong ones it turned out. These are also placed on the map.

The map is mainly inspired by Interbellum photos, mainly from the 1920's during the Rif rebellion. Luckily there already are a number of aircraft that can feature quite passably for that time period. Thanks to the info provided by juanmalpuente, there are 9 airfields and 1 hydroplane base on the map, all in the correct areas, insofar as possible in Il-2 anyway. Rif aircraft were very few and unreliable so in possible missions, some feats of imagination may be needed in providing aircraft for the hypothetical Rif air force. There already quite a number of aircraft in Rif schemes - supposedly captured from the Spanish.

As for a completion estimate. It is coming along very nicely after at least 5 years of starts and stops and should be ready very soon.

Looking great.

More on Alhucemas landing, with maps, pics and a lot about aviation used. They don't talk about the Farman goliath used (3 land version by Spaniards and 1 seaplane version by French)

Wonderful links. And this period illustration is ever so useful. Notice the Rifian artillery shelters on the heights above the landing beaches. Totally correct or not they are great inspiration. Thanks ...
