Realtek HD audio and " Speech " folder sound files ..~DISCUSSED
« on: January 06, 2010, 08:43:07 AM »

Hello ,
for quite some time have been experiencing game pause each time any of the speech sound file
during ingame communication is triggered and it is getting very annoying and I've had it
( Target_in_fire_Direct_hit , Direct_hit_Target_destroyed , Good_job etc.... ) all of those
speech folder .wav files no matter which game version install .
I am not the only one having this issue with Realtek HD onboard audio .
Tried about every option available to solve this issue but it's no go .

While I have pretty good powerful machine with Intel Quad Core and GTS250 1GB XLR8 Performance Edition
graphics card , my system is running onboard latest Realtek HD Audio .
I am not going to buy sound card so just wanted to deal with this sound game pause issue in a different way .

Now , engines sounds in my mod but also for modded IL-2 1946 since V 4.09b1m were in
their natural uncompressed .wav " PCM " audio format .
Speech folder audio files are in compressed .wav MPEG Layer-3 audio format .
What I did was converted few major speech folder audio files like
( Target_on_fire_Direct_hit , Direct_hit_Target_destroyed , Good_job etc.... )
from .wav MPEG Layer-3 format to .wav " PCM " format just like engines are but with basic minimum
convertion to see if there is still any pause when spech is triggered .

Some of my new converted " Speech " audio files are:
Bit Rate.................64kps
Audio sample size......8 bit
Channels.................1 ( mono )
Audio sample rate.....8 kHz
Audio format............PCM

Looks like there is no more game pause with files that I did converted in to " PCM " format
during ingame play as onboard Realtek HD is dealing much better with direct uncompressed
audio files rather than compressed files  :D
Difference in audio file size between compressed and uncompressed file is pretty much very
little anyway so I would prefer to have all my " Speech " folder audio files to be converted
in to " PCM " audio format shown above .

Here is the real kicker , I converted few files each by each by using Microsoft " record "
application but with hundreds and hundreds of " Speech  " folders sound files it will take me
a long , long , long time to do them all .

My question is , is anyone of you having sound software that can convert more MPEG Layer-3 files
at the same time in to  " PCM " format to avoid having to do it each by each sound file ?

Please , any help and input is very appreciated as I am about to eat my keyboard alive !!  ;D

Thank you

S! HG

Hi HolyGrail,
MediaCoder can do this for you. I tested it, it works fine but there is certainly other free software that can do this.
Give it a try if you want : http://www.mediacoderhq.com/

Hi Korrigan  :)

thank you so much for this free software tip , I just downloaded and installed this thing .
Now , it's gonna be a little bit chaos to understand and get oriented with this application .
Will try my best and will report back as soon as possible .  ;)

It looks like I am lost on this one , I tried to play with software and found option
to convert to " PCM " but when I did that it converted .wav MPEG Layer-3 in to just
" PCM " as it is no longer " .wav PCM " format but just " PCM " which game can't read  ;D
Don't know what to do next , will have to probably manually convert " speech " folder
files each by each by using that Microsoft default record application   :(

Hi HolyGrail,
I've tried also with default record application as you suggested...but after resamplin' some sounds (e.g. DE/Actors6) not every sound has been correctly played by the game. Too much distorsion. This only to advise you before a cyclopic work.
Indeed it sound interesting if solve the infamous micro-stuttering prob

Hi hguderian ,  :)
did you converted some of the .wav MPEG Layer-3 speech folder sound files
also in to  .wav PCM format and you're getting some sound distortions ?
that's interesting , I haven't heard any problem thus far , are you running onboard sound card ?
I am asking because all previous sounds for modded game were in .wav PCM natural
uncompressed format very much at something like:

Bit Rate.................705kps
Audio sample size......16 bit
Channels.................1 ( mono )
Audio sample rate.....44 kHz
Audio format............PCM

and there were no game pauses because of engine sounds but always because of voice
communication speech folder sounds which got me thinking to convert and resample these
.wav MPEG Layer-3 format sound files also in to .wav PCM format .
To me every time sound file from speech folder is triggered and someone opens their
mouth I get like a one second pause and it's extremely annoying .
I'll do some more testing with converting at least one complete pack like " US " for example
and will run tests for any distortions to make sure there is hopefuly no issue .
I believed that since game is running engines sounds without issues , it should run OK also
with speech folder voice communication sound files converted to .wav PCM format .

Thank you for posting advice , I'll be looking for any sounds distortion .
Need more testing .
If there is sound distortion , I'll try to convert speech sound testing folder files again from :

Bit Rate.................64kps
Audio sample size......8 bit
Channels.................1 ( mono )
Audio sample rate.....8 kHz
Audio format............PCM

to

Bit Rate.................705kps
Audio sample size......16 bit
Channels.................1 ( mono )
Audio sample rate.....44 kHz
Audio format............PCM

Hi HolyGrail,
Have you try to select "Waveform file" under the "PCM" tab, like this:

The conversion is fine but I must admit that I have not enough time to test it now  :(

Yes I've onboard card (Soundmax HD but I think it's the same as realtek).
Now I'll try to convert DE Actors4 with new bit rate...and then I'll report any result.
Cheers

Hi Korrigan  :)

no , I don't know how I've overlooked that output waveform option  :-[
Excellent , will give it try immediately tomorrow !!  :)
That could save a pile up of hours by not having to convert each sound file .
It looks like this might be what I've missed during experiments with software
and after all will be able to convert compressed .wav in to uncompressed .wav
format workig with multiple speech sound files at once  :D

I am sure my Realtek HD is gonna love it !!  :)
Thank you for helpful tip .

@ hguderian  :)
since we're running onboard sound cards then we don't have many other options
except for buying new and system CPU independent sound card even thou I have Quad Core .
I tried to turn off voice communication in game settings option and now flying is smooth
as silk without any game pause .
It's pretty clear that Realtek HD have some beef with handling these compressed
.wav MPEG Layer-3 format speech sound files .

Will also test some more  :)
Convertion in to natural uncompressed .wav PCM format might be the answer to my
annoying game pauses .

Audio format............PCM

This does the work...only I've sampled all DE folder in 22050&stereo.
Few sounds seems cutted but it work...I'll remade all in mono.

May be you've killed the monstrous MicroStuttering!

Hello hguderian  :)

lets try anything to nail that SOB microstuttering and pauses almost each time some
voice communication AI pilots open their mouths  ;D
I just thought by logic that game is currently processing unnecessarily two different
sound formats even thou they're both .wav files they're still different .
Compressed .wav MPEG Layer-3 format & uncompressed .wav PCM format .
Why not to have same format for engines sounds and speech sounds , right ?
As I've said previously , we don't have many options left and this could be really helpful
for onboard sound cards not having them to process different format with already
workload of stress during heated game play as they don't have their own CPU  8)
Lets try to make it for onboard sound cards perhaps a little bit eaiser .
It's all at this point just speculation and it needs more testing to see if the outcome is
very positive .
I was unable to do much since yesterday as I am busy with other stuff  and I am so
happy you took your time and experimenting with testing  :)
Hopefully I will get some more time over this weekend and be able also to do more testing
with Realtek HD so we can compare results .
Main mission is to get rid of microstuttering and game play pause as much as possible .

Thank you again for working on it hguderian  :-*
If this thing works we should make it new mod with converted spech sound files in
to .wav PCM for those who're running like us onboard sound card .
We have nothing against Realtek HD nor against Soundmax HD and other onboard sound
cards , the sound is amazing with subwoofer box addition  :)
They're just struggling a little bit with IL-2 1946 .
