Cockpit might follow also.
More work for me....(T _ T)
Now you showed yourself and if you won`t finish it, they all will blame you
Conversion of LOD models from Thirdwire community is best done using UMC2v1.3.exe (but keep always in mind that your lods must be put in a fisrt order folder, not a subfolder, as this program does not deal well with paths) - but smoothing is not preserved although the resulting 3ds file is quite fine. Another way that preserves the smoothing is to use DXripper, but then you must have one of the original thirdwire simulators installed to do so.
However, from what I have seen while testing models conversion processes, smoothing of Thirdwire community models is often in fact rather poor, due generally to lack of systematically welding adjacent vertices, the resulting very nice display resulting from paintshop "magic" - skins can really change completely the appearance of a model.
I think sometime ago I was trying to find it, because I saw your discussion on this matter somewhere, but without any luck. Would be nice if you could send me a link

Also you are quite right about skins, they can do a magic. This model has a very nice, bu I didn`t understood this statement:
"due generally to lack of systematically welding adjacent vertices"
Sorry, I am very new to 3d.
