Where to put mods?
« on: December 07, 2012, 08:55:21 AM »

Before you fuss at me for my stupidity, remember I am the 7o yr old, not very smart member. :-[  My question is a pretty general one I guess, and I'm not real sure I even have put it in the right section, but here goes....  I have an example.  In the MAPMODS section of the forum, one of the maps, or a revision to one, states "extract to your #UP or #DBW folder".  Does this mean exactly what it says?  When it is downloaded as a zip file, and I unzip it (using 7zip), do I just point it to the #DBW folder in my main game folder as it says and let it go, or do I need to really do something additional?  Is there a rule of thumb?  And, would this just apply to mapmods as in my example?  For info, I always use DBW 1.71 now.  Again, please pardon my ignorance.  I know I have read here someplace, sometime, that it has to do with file structure or something like that, but that goes right over my head.  Any really simple advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks, as always, for the help.

I never extract files directly into my game installation, even if the instructions advise you to.
I always extract to a temporary folder on Desktop, have a look in the folder to see what is there, then cut an paste from Desktop to the appropriate section of the game installation.

With maps. look in the #DBW folder.

You should have a MapMods folder, and in that a Maps subfolder

root/#DBW/MapMods/Maps

In Maps there are more subfolders, one containing each Map Mod and perhaps a _Tex folder, containing map textures.

Now look in the temp folder on Desktop and find the map folder for the map mod. Cut and paste this into  root/#DBW/MapMods/Maps
If there is a _Tex folder so the same with this.

To activate the map you will have some text to copy into the all.ini file
You will find this in root/#DBW/MapMods/Maps
Open in a text editor, like Notepad, enter the text line and save.

The new map should now work.

Thanks very much for your response.  I have pretty much always worried about putting mods in the wrong place.  I usually unzip them into a temporary folder, and then scrutinize them, but then I'm not sure.  Seems as though when I unzip them right into my game (or one of its folders), I end up with a folder with the mod name on it, just sitting there in the main game or other folder, even though the installation instructions say that that will put the files into their proper place.  And even I am smart enough to know that won't do any good.  I just have one more question for you.  Do you do the same thing for any kind of mod, not just mapmods?  Again, thank you very much for responding.  I get kinda embarrassed at times to ask questions because I figure they aren't very smart, but shoot, I just don't know and there is no one else to ask.

Other mods are similar.
Examples:

root/#DBW/ShipAshe/3do/etc..........

root/#DBW/air_MB152/3do/etc

Mods of objects also need text entries in various *.ini or *.properties files  so you will need a folder to contain these which will be something like:

root/#DBW/00_STD/com/etc and root/#DBW/00_STD/i18n/etc

or maybe called

root/#DBW/Files/com/etc and root/#DBW/Files/i18n/etc

The folder name below #DBW is not critical but all the other folder names are critical.

Bob Holmes:
See also here, a specific tip for the South Vietnam 1968 map by Diciecapt.
..my tip is on the bottom..

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,18990.msg324479.html#new

Usually, you have to do always the same things:

Find the "maps" folder in your install.
In DBW:
\DBW\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\#DBW\MapMods\maps

Or...e.g.:
IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\MODS\MAPMODS\Maps
in another modded game I have, based on HSFX4.11-not important here, :)

Inside the "maps" folder is a _tex folder, where the textures as per insctructions go.
Usually you can simply take the map mod's _tex folder and copy and paste that inside your
game's "maps" folder. When asked to overwrite, say yes to all.
Sometimes you may need to deeper consult the map/_tex structure, e.g. when the modder did not give a unified _tex folder including all needed textures.
E.g. sometimes new trees need to go into:
IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\#DBW\MapMods\maps\_Tex\Trees

Or sometimes even new objects are needed, then follow the inscructions carefully!

Finally, the map must be added (if it is a new map) to the all.ini file, see link below for details:

E.g. there:

Open all.ini with wordpad, add the lines, close and hit "save changes". ;)

...and so on. TBH using mods for IL-2 is quite some reading...sometimes. ;) :D You are here, so you made it for most parts.. :)
