The Leticia Triangle Map
« on: January 03, 2013, 02:20:01 AM »

OK, where is the Leticia Triangle? Sounds like something from the X-Files ... ha ha.

It is in South America and is formed where Peru, Columbia and Brazil come together in an oddly configured border area. In 1932 a little war was fought for control of this area by Peru and Columbia. Because of the dearth of cleared fields and landing places, air power was projected mainly by use of float-planes, the immensely huge Amazon river and tributaries being very convenient for landing. And aside from being one gigantic landing field from one end of the map to another, the river is also wide enough to use ships on. There is no need for any subterfuge in placing way-points for ships. They work on the river quite well.

The area was remote, hardy populated and covered with jungle. The map will probably feature 2 versions, one with and one without 3D trees. The one without will use photo realistic textures for the jungle so as to give some variation in the landscape, something that 3D trees just cannot do in Il-2.

The map is from a suggestion by Realdarko. It is progressing very well and should be done shortly. There is little populating to be done and no real airfields to be made either. The map is mainly an exercise in texturing and so fairly easy.  Huzzah huzzah!

Wow, that looks very promising! Another good map might be for the Peru-Ecuador 1941 war. I remember playing the old "Latinos" campaign which depicted the both conflicts.

For this map will be nice to have some more seaplanes. Aero 101, Ki10 and Letov S.321

Never knew that Peru was involved in several wars during the 20th century ... interesting.

Peruvians even used paratroopers in the 1941, this must have been the largest use of airborne troops in South America ever, if not on the whole southern hemisphere. Peruvians used our Czech LT-38 (you chaps know them as Panzer38(t) when the were pressed into the service by the Wehrmacht.) One of those tanks has been returned to us as a gift from the Peruvian government.

Flying tank over Prague :)

There were a few large drops in New Guinea during WW2 from memory - Nadzab operation in 1943 springs to mind. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landing_at_Nadzab

I thought you might like to see some screenshots. The map is virtually finished and should be posted very soon ... these are from the version with photo-realistic jungle textures. There will also be a version with regular 3D trees for wood RGB24, but that version will have less variation in color since only 1 type of 3D tree can be generated. The photo-textures allow for more combinations of color and texturing.

Very nice! Just wondering, is there possibly a way to get both, the variation of forest jungle textures and the 3D forest by using the textures and placing a less dense forest mask on top?
Naturally, this works nice for savannah type of terrain with my idea of a "reduced layer scrub forest".
Maybe the impression can be tricked by using a less dense wood type or a less dense jungle type with only a couple of layers used.
Only a brainwind, of course.

Looking very good! :)
