Very nice! Just wondering, is there possibly a way to get both, the variation of forest jungle textures and the 3D forest by using the textures and placing a less dense forest mask on top?
Naturally, this works nice for savannah type of terrain with my idea of a "reduced layer scrub forest".
Maybe the impression can be tricked by using a less dense wood type or a less dense jungle type with only a couple of layers used.

I made a less dense woods rgb24 covering on a private retex ... indeed mimicking low scrub ... it looked quite nice actually. But on the map here, you can still only get 3D trees by using 1 texture only. Those 3D trees will never appear on any other rgb value, so it will remain monotonous in any case. Especially if you need to make enormously large swathes of jungle ... then the tiling effect comes into play and just about ruins the effect of jungle ...

3D trees look best in small bunches, not in large areas ... so i find anyway ...

I do wish someone would come up with a way to allow more than just 1 3D tree texture though ...

I see and that also makes sense. I look forward to this map. I imagine it will be very interisting.

More than one base texture available for wood is a dream, that would allow for multiple underlying textures. The only alternative would be using random trees as replacement, with all the known disadavantages. Not that I pretend to know about it.
But someone at AAS came up with a plan to increase the appearing random trees systematically in spite of wood/forest..maybe I can find that post again some day soon. :-\

Oh, that is very easy to do.

On the unformatted map_C or more commonly my_mapC.tga - you paint areas in rgb196 and on those areas more random trees will appear than usual. Then you format it again of course to get the C_table ...

You can also make .tree. textures for all textures, but that's a bit overkill I find ...

Indeed interisting, thanks for the tip! I used to assume no one reall knows what determines the exact appearance of random trees, but I think that relates rather to the sort of trees and bushes generated.
If I recall correctly, the XXfields.tga is also a means to trick the game engine into producing trees.
The one area where these are really redundant is on airfields/-bases.
I also find it interisting that in FMB+, often trees show up on exactly these airbases where there are no trees once you switch to the 3D game world. I read about that but forgot the context TBH.

Right, but you need to make a corresponding XXfields.tree.tga texture as well for the trees to appear. It has to be a black/white image, in which the white areas allow trees to appear - once again randomly.

Ah yes, I once received a tutorial for this by SAS~Mission_bug and Klaus109, now I recall the context.
It has been done e.g. on the newer Vietnam maps.

On another note, it would surely be a very attractive addition to utilize the Hi Resolution modbase to simulate higher resolution of the wood 3D masks, or even create jungle forest with a certain percentage of palmtrees. Not sure if this is related to this mod since to my understanding the forest as in "wood" is a variation of 3D models.

thanks for this map, agracier. Peru and Equador fought a short war in 1941. Equador had no airforce. But Wikipedia's entry for the Ro37 mentions Equador having one. Many of the Peruvian planes are available in IL2. As the relevant map doesn't exist, perhaps the Burma map could be used by any wanting to do that campaign.

cheers
