Question about skins extracted from .sfs file ~ solved
« on: March 12, 2013, 05:27:25 AM »

I extracted skin from .sfs package renamed skin1o.tgb to skin1.tga and opened it with gimp. Skin shows alpha channel or whatever it's called in places where plane takes damage. So how can I make extracted skin to complete with no damage layer?

remove the alpha layer, paint over the holes
and save it
do it with gimp or photoshop

if you dont know how to skin aircraft,or paint skins
then search skinning,how to etc.

There is everything you would ever need to know already in print and video on how to maker skins
and years worth of tutorials online etc.

so no sense me or anyone else re-explaining it all

Cheers

well, that depends....what, exactly, is 'your case'?
as far as tutorials go.....
there are tutorials.
there are no 'special case' tutorials.

well, i don't use Gimp, i use Photoshop, so i can't really help you there, but i'm sure what Boomer has replied to you will work, about removing the alpha layer, etc...
i first started skinning by doing the very thing you've been asking - removing markings in order to make it blank.
i used no tutorials, simply taught myself as i went, and asking specific questions if i got stuck.
anyway, as with anything in life, if you really want to do something, you'll persist until you get it right.  ;)
the feeling of satisfaction when you first figure it out for yourself, is way better than being taught by anyone else!  8)
the alternative is to just download skins - it's not as if there aren't thousands available... :D

I tried what boomer said but no succes yet I got alpha channel removed which wasn't difficult at all but then painting the colors is much more difficult

I had the same problem and I found my way to get rid of the holes without any painting.

Did it with Gimp and Irfan.

First I renamed the tgb to tga and opened it with Gimp.
(As I have Gimp_german only I must show you the attached pics
to understand.)

When I had this tga open I choose "save as",
then I choose: see pic_#1 !!! and click the "+"
to open a menu for extensions.

then I choose "BMP" in this appearing menu, see pic_#2

and click "save" and also in the next menu "save"
ignoring any further dialog fields.

I then have a 4096kb bmp files wich I make a 1026kb skin file with
Irfan where I use "Image">"Decrease Color Depth">"256 Colors" and save this.

Give this a try...
