Great news! There is a distinct lack of maps over China!!!

China is mysterious land... its very dificult to find maps of old WW2 airbases there.
but we now have a BIG original WW2 allied map of mainland Japan and where all
its industry complexes are for bombing missions.
Look here at the bottom of the webpage...
where you see a map of Japan and these letters - TARGETS IN JAPAN
click on the map for larger view  ;)

if you do not like the map,
you can always look at the pretty girls in bikini right below  :D

Almost have all the major rivers finished.  I'm using the narrowest rivers possible.  Unfortunately I haven't had good results with Gimp's Blur tool.  I chose "1" but it still blurs too much and makes missing parts of the water in some places.  Rivers look OK without blur but might look a little better with it.  I'm just not sure how to do it while keepin all water contiguous.

Also, I'm looking for a good water color.  I think a light green or olive color would be nice.  Anybody know of any water colors like that?

There are no seas, only inland rivers.

CT, my method for thin rivers is to draw a line 2 pixels wide. Then blur it. Then go over the line with another 2 pixel wide black line or series of dots and then blur again. This makes the rivers continuous and thin.

Remember: you need to make sure that your river is continuously less than 128 greyscale. I try and ensure my rivers are in fact continuously under 70 greyscale in their central core all along their length.

My rivers on the South Ukraine map were made with this method and I am satisfied with their appearance.

I do not see how rivers would look ok without blur. If you do not blur, you get a jagged "jig-saw cut" appearance to all your water edges.

I would suggest making brown rivers.

Mandril's method of making rivers works very well ... though perhaps as an added feature, I make several layers of such rivers. That way you can not only blur them several times, but also set the transparency of each layer to a different value. I often do not blur one of the layers, make it 1 pixel wide and then adjust the transparency so that you get a more or less continuous rgb value ...

Un-blurred rivers can be turned into canals - prevalent in China I would think - but only as long as they are 180 or 90 degrees to north. The you get nice straight canals and can raise the adjacent banks up several rgb values so that you get raised dikes or levees ... once the canals start to curve around in the landscape too much, the effect is far less pleasing ...

I'd imagine that the same trick would work for flooded rice paddies, if you wanted to mess with that.

But remember, the Chinese broached a lot of dikes and levees to deter the Japanese advance. So, especially for rainy season maps, there might be lots of flooding.

If I'm not mistaken, and there is always a chance for that, this is a general area where the American Volunteer Group or the Flying Tigers were operational ...

Look at the links I have posted in the thread earlier.
In it you will find all the information as to the battles fought in this area of the world and also
see some important maps so you can make some campaigns/missions.
