B-29B all defensive weapons removed BUT the tail turret.
« on: March 29, 2013, 06:27:01 AM »

As a japanese night fighter aficionado, I think that the über armed vanilla B-29 are too tough for me, so I want to request the historical B-29B variant that appeared in the night skies over Japan. Check what Air Force Museum says about that model:

"The Boeing B-29B was a modification of the basic B-29 design for use in the Pacific during World War II for low-level bombing raids against Japan. The Army leadership, particularly Gen. Curtis LeMay, felt that a lighter and faster bomber would be more effective since fighter opposition over Japan was minimal by late 1944 and flak was the most serious threat to U.S. bombers. The B-29B had all defensive armament removed except for the tail turret. The 20mm cannon was removed and the two .50-cal. machine guns were aided by the installation of an AN/APG-15B radar fire control system. Bell aircraft built 311 -B models at their Marietta, Ga., plant between January and September 1945."

Wondering If is possible to recreate this variant. Will be happy even If the 3d is untouched, but the turrets silenced (excpet for the tail one)

Thanks.

This is true. In March, 1944, when General Curtis LeMay ordered the B-29s to attack Japan at low level at night, he ordered the defensive turrets removed from the B-29s to save weight... a fact Japanese night fighters were more than happy to take advantage of. However, the sheer number of B29's they had to intercept meant that the ones that were shot down had little impact on the overall effectiveness of the bombing raids.

Do you mean like this?

Maybe if you ask SAS~Riken, he will finish this and release it. :)

I updated the "request" Gerax.

Thanks, I was unable to visualize how a B-29 with removed weapons would look like. :)

The other one is the A variant with 3 blades on the prop. Tail gunner only. I just have to do a rotation of the bombbay loadouts because the bombs are falling backwards. Once that's finished, We're golden ;)

Don't forget "Project Matterhorn" where B-29A's had there weapons removed to "HUMP" fuel.
