Port Moresby

Here's a wip map that is coming along far better than I thought. There is still lots of work to do, but basic texturing is done so I thought to share some screenshots.

It's another Pacific map, this time of Port Moresby in New Guinea up to the north coast, focusing mainly on the area around the famous Kokoda Track.

Since I'm not a hot shot when it comes to historical research on such things as airfield layouts, anyone who has any info on the airfields in this area will be welcomed, the same goes for towns, villages etc.

As far as completion dat goes, well hopefully before the summer vacation starts in July, but delays are always possible because of circumstances.

These are just some empty landscape shots, no objects yet. Just to give a feel for the colors and textures ... more smaller landscape details will be added later, things like swamps, mangroves cultivated fields, scrub and grasslands. The main landscape here is of course thick vegetation, which translates into lots of green, trees and brown patches due to land erosion. Rivers are also kept to a very strict minimum. In the real world there are myriads of streams and brooks and run-offs and whatnot in this area, but Il-2 makes rivers and waterways look like the Blue Danube or the Scheldt at Antwerp and this doesn't really look well on this kind of mountainous jungle map. So, few rivers/streams ...

The ed_map also deviates from the normal type, since the relief version had too many contrasting colors which interfered with placing names, tracks and other things necessary on a map. This type of ed_map is somewhat more subdued but hopefully legible.

what the heck ever happened to that New Guinea map that was being done awhile back?............. did it just fade away?................. I don't ever remember seeing it finished.

This one looks very good so far and Agracier is always very prompt with finishing and publishing his maps.

Cheers

Oh, I'm guilty of letting maps fade away into obscurity as well ... sometimes they start well and then you encounter obstacles or real life intrudes ... or new developments are posted and suddenly all older material seems dépassée ...

Anyway, this one looks very good so far and won't need much extensive populating with objects either ... always a consideration to take advantage of ... ha ha

Always loved the Kokoda track stories and the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, long time ago we flew a mission on that scenario and I must admit that with this map of yours there will be a "second wave" for sure.

I'll be eagerly waiting for updates.

Now that is an awesome collection of detailed maps. In fact, not only for Port Moresby, but also for another Pacific Map that is nearing completion...

Many many thanks for this link.

I'm looking forward to this map. It looks so much better than the stock PF map of the same area.

Well, the stock maps are quite old and moreover were in 512x512 pixel textures. Compared to a 2048 pixel texture, that means 16 times less info and detail per texture (if my math is correct at least).

One thing I've noticed so far (and it's early days on airfields yet) is that there are quite a number of small airstrips in he area still - Efogi and environs for instance - and I will have to look into if they were active during WWI or not. Intuitively I'd say yes, why else build strips in these forsaken areas, but if anyone knows more about this, a short bit of info always helps speed things along ...

Just some views of cultivated fields, or rather orchards or groves or whatever of tropical trees (if that's the correct word). Anyway, the terrain looks rather good ...

I've also found quite a number of satellite views of airfields in the area, most useable on the map ... that will be a next step. It's also quite remarkable that Kokoda airfield itself runs smack next to a forest and now next to cultivated tree groves.

No problem. Did you notice the maps for Buna, Wewak and Salamaua? Of course, that would never be meant as a "hint", would it?
