Yokosuka H5Y-1 "Cherry" Flying Boat
« on: May 20, 2013, 10:20:41 AM »

Started work on this a few weeks ago; currently it's all in Gmax but once i've finished the UVW mapping i'm going to import it into IL-2 "over" the PBY Catalina. The aircraft is the Yokosuka H5Y-1 flying boat, a fairly rare type (~20 built) that saw limited use in coastal patrols.

Ditto. Impressive, most impressive (heavy breathing in mask). That machine is historically significant. Is actually important history wise in the Pacific.

Cheers! Just for the record, you're not confusing it with the H6K "Mavis"?

I couldn't find much on the history of this aircraft (H5Y) online; if there is more to it rather than a reserve role, i'd be interested to know.

There isn't much to know. It was designed as a scaled-down version of the Mavis but was not a success because of its poor performance. Only about twenty were ever built and they were used as coastal patrol and anti-submarine craft in the early part of the war but soon retired from active serice and used as transport/liaison planes.
