Any interest in an Alaska map?
« on: January 30, 2010, 11:48:52 PM »

I've been toying with the idea of doing a fullscale map of Alaska.

I've developed a taste for big maps since my 1:1 North Korea map.

It would be about 2000km x 2000km, circa 1950's, I figure for fictional cold war style scenarios, defending Alaska from the Soviets, etc...

Even though it's big, I don't think this one would be a GPU-buster, as Alaska is pretty lightly populated.

If there's enough interest, I might tackle it, but it's a lot of work...

There are never enough maps ... but maybe to keep it more manageable and at 1/1 scale you needn't really make all of Alaska ... maybe the coastlines with a bit of Russia or around the Bering Straight - you know, the part Sarah Palin can see when she looks out the window ... ha ha

Hi CY6,

I was thinking along the same lines as Agracier

I know there is new data available for the area Agracier talked about.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I would probably do the eastern tip or Russia to around fairbanks, because most of the major airbases were located in that strip. Also, the most logical invasion route for the Russians wouldn't have been from the West, but from the South, up through Anchorage...

I agree with Agracier.  A map of Alaska by itself really doesn't lend itself to much unless you assume the Japanese or Soviets successfully invaded Alaska.  A map of western Alaska, the Bearing Sea, and the eastern coast of Russia does open the possibility of a Soviet invasion attempt and intercepting Soviet aircraft over the Bearing Sea.

You could possibly do a map of SE coastal Alaska, from Anchorage to Juneau, which could cover hypothetical Japanese or Soviet raids on U.S. Alaskan supply bases and the Can-Am highway. Lots of dramatic terrain, which goes from water all the way up to mountains.

Alternately, you could do the Bering Strait area, with a bit of Kamchatka and a bit of Alaska. There was plenty of Cold War tension in that area, almost entirely potential conflicts between aircraft. Typically, a patrol/spy plane would slip over the international border and then dart back to the correct side, usually "escorted" by the other side's interceptors. As such, it a it was one of the major potential flashpoints for a US - USSR conflict.

Unfortunately, the terrain around the Bering Strait is mostly tundra - flat and boring to look at from the air. Of course, for a beginning map-maker, that's a virtue.

This is a great idea. Alaska is beautiful to fly over.
There was a Japanese invasion of some parts of the Islands over there, but I can´t
remember the exact figures and  facts behind it. But would be very interesting to
recreate the same scenario and there is also the scenario of a Russian Invasion of
Alaska in early 1950´s too.
I say go for it!

Very interesting area. Specially for Cold war scenarios. Migs against Sabres, Sabre Dogs against Tu-4...

also, who could forget those 2 battles against the japanese on 2 islands off of (but still part of) Alaska? that would be nice if you put that long line of islands off of Alaska in the map too
