Hawker Monsoon
« on: June 15, 2013, 05:07:24 PM »

Came across this earlier while doing some research:

http://www.scaleworkshop.com/workshop/monsoontm_1.htm

Thought was quite a nice concept; would people be interested if I did a quick Franken (A6M2N + Typhoon)?

Burma 46 here we come.

Awesome Mikoyan  ;D :D

A very unusual concept.

Similar concept was that jet float aircraft that the British made for a possible on going Pacific war.

Would love a franken   ;D ;) :)

This sounds like a great idea, but the A6M2-N's loaded weight is less than half the weight of the Typhoon (5400lb vs. 11400lb).  Therefore the Zeros float is only about half the size necessary for the Typhoon.  I don't know how hard it would be to increase the size of the float or maybe you could use one of the floats from the A-20 float plane (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,15278.0.html).   The A-20 is slightly over twice the weight of the Typhoon.

Hope you are successful ,,, I enjoy seaplanes!

I think it looks cool... And the name is pretty good too!  A dedicated seaplane would have the landing gear and all the gear's hydraulic system removed... That would be a significant weight reduction right there... So maybe this model's pontoon isn't too far off.

If you did want to go super realistic I would add a fin or extended rudder to it.  Look at the Wildcat-fish and the float spitfire... They all needed extra fins due to the extra surface area the floats make...

But for a concept I think the model looks great as is!  Any seaplane is welcome in my books!

Any name for that project? I think a carrier based Typhoon or Tempest is a better idea.

Not too fussed about that - will do a quick calculation and stretch the float in length, beam and draught accordingly. The Zero's float isn't fully immersed, only about 45% by eye, so there is plenty of reserve buoyancy. Also, one of the advantages of increasing volume as compared to other dimensions is that the relationship between length and volume is cubic - i.e I won't have to double the length of the float to double displacement.

Other floatplanes will follow in time. I will not produce frankens of the F1M and Kingfisher - but I may tackle them in time as new 3D models. For now I'm going to finish the Stranraer first anyway.

The jet flying boat you're thinking of is the Saunders Roe Squirt. I saw the surviving prototype a few weeks ago.
