Regarding water/river and sea  :P stuff:

I searched around and also checked my map box folder with all my map related stuff (and my WIPs) and found a.o. some links:

To have different colours on sea and rivers, it seems mandatory to paint a shallow colour on map c around RGB 90 on the rivers, underlay a nice e.g. brownish tex and choose a clever base RGB water colour in the load ini...pretty decently explained by Avala btw. I also wildly connected all info regarding water and map_c some time ago, can also send you that, basically pms and stuff a la brainstorm put together.

So, the links:

Thread is down!
Map Tools!

I can quote all tools and links, I saved the thread's link on desk.

And so on...most important 1st link.
You will need to experiment should you go for map_c work. :D

I also found out that in Perfect mode aka hardwareshaders=1, you can free one slot:
RGB 29 can be used aka water=1.

On my mod of ag's Djibouti, I used that slot to paint an extra texture around lake Assal.

In any case, the RGB guide comes in very handy..

Edit:
Moderators, please check, it seems something with the map tools thread is gone south...

Thanks darki :) o devo dire oscuro :) you can't paste those trees on the static.ini, they are just the default autopop trees. Anyway I can't see how to do it!

No but I think what darki means is how to pick the trees and put them wherever you like like other static.ini objects :)

Nice job WhiteCat...

But I'm Vietnamese and unfortunately this looks nothing like the scenery from Viet Nam, apparently the lighting was very off. From the screenshots it looks like you are using wartime photographs of Viet Nam by the US as a reference, but cameras used by that time does not produce true colors, it is in a much cooler and darker tones than reality.

Here are some images that would give you a more correct picture at Viet Nam.

The screenshots of your map in sunny and clear weathers looks fairly close to a normal day in Viet Nam, but it's still not as bright as it should been, and screenshots with cloudy/hazy weathers seriously looks like a storm is about to hit. You should tweak the lighting of your map to be brighter and reduce the density of the blueish fog in hazy days, the banzan dirt also should have higher saturation.

Except for that, everything else is picture perfect, even the vegetation is pretty close to real life Viet Nam.

Regarding water/river and sea  :P stuff:

The river Huong (Song Huong, the river that passes through Hue), is described to have 7+ different colors depending on seasons and time of day, many Vietnamese rivers are like that, so I'm pretty sure we're all going to have to make a concession at the end of the day regarding the colors of rivers. :)

EDIT:
Resized images, better do this from now on now that I know...

Hi Mark, thanks for your constructive review :) by the start of the post looks like I really had missed the whole point but after reading it in deep looks like the scenery is OK and it's just about the brightness and the saturation right? I certainly could make it brighter but there's a big discussion here about saturation:
Most of the mappers here tend to do maps with colors very unsaturated. In fact I'm one of the most 'cartoonish' map modders, if you look maps like Redko's they are very unsaturated and very dark. This is due limitations in IL2 graphic engine: although it's a very good engine, it doesn't desaturate enough with the distance or altitude as the real atmospheric air does. Therefore most of mappers tend to texture with desaturated colors so they look right from high - medium altitude. In my case I like a lot flying low and air-ground operations so I focus on ground detail and  I force the saturation a bit so the map looks better at low altitude. But believe me, if we saturate it more it's going to look like a Tintin comic 'Tintin in Vietnam' :)
I could take a look when I can though. My IL2 PC is not operative yet (I moved recently). Also, regarding the fog: it's not map specific but controlled in a different way, and so far I don't know of anyone that has been capable of tweak it or eliminate it (in fact I tried 2 years ago because I wanted to get brown fog for the desert).
Regarding the rivers as you probably know they share the same color as the sea; I'd like to make them more brownish for example but then you would get the 'Brown Sea' :)

I used to think "Vietnam Full Scale" map was one of the best, but this one is absolutely much better. The colors are much better. It's all green like it should be!

Hats of to you man you nailed it!

I must tell you White Cat,

I think there is still some improvements to do. Like Mark_009 is saying. as you can see in his pictures, there's much more vegetation, more light.
I don't know if you saw some vietnam war movies, but in "Apocalypse Now" there seems to be lots and lots of long rivers, they're narrow, and the jungle is right on the edge of each sides of the shore. In IL-2 there's always a space of empty ground between the shore and the jungle. It would be nice to have some minor spots of ground near the rivers to place villages in the FMB for example.
I later found out that Apocalypse now was originaly filmed in the Philippines because of it's landscape similarity. But who cares if it looks similar to the Philippines.

One more important thing I have noticed, is that in every Vietnam map for IL-2 there's always the same type of trees, european trees if I can say so. I think plam trees would be a better choice for a jungle type of map. You can always mix the palm trees with other type of trees of course!

The one thing about Vietnam is that it wasn't just air to air battle. It was air to ground battle a lot. So, the map kind of has to be good looking when you drop altitude. I'm not a map maker unfortunately. I'm just giving you my honorable advice :)
I feel to tell you all of this because you're the only guy so far that has made the "vietnam map" really come alive. You're the first guy who has introduced bamboo in a vietnam map that I at least noticed!
Maybe if you plan to do some improvements, that would be wonderfull!
If you do, please let me know!  ;)

Very best regards,

C.W
