G'day Archie,
Bill Halliwell here. Ex-RAAF. Military Historian these days and I've been searching aircraft chat rooms to gather more info, if I can, on the lone RAAF Vega 5 RAAF Serial Number A42-1. It had a fascinating history after it was impressed from its civilian owner just before WW2.
I'm about to do a build of an old 1950s Lindberg 1/48 (1/4) kit of the Vega known as 'Winnie Mae' a world record holder, for a time. I'm going to do it as the RAAF version and the subject of livery and camo came up. A modeller in Australia has done a lovely 1/72 model Vega with an all green upper and a 'whiteish' blue underside.
I think your second image with the two-tone camo might be more accurate. But I'm still trying to verify that. Sadly, I can only find one photo of the particular aircraft but when it still had its civilian livery.
By the way, there is no record of the RAAF Vega having 'spats' over the main wheels. For military purposes these would have been removed as they added time to servicing the wheels and changing tires etc.
So, if you or anyone reading this has more details on the RAAF Vega I'd truly appreciated your assistance.
Cheers, and all the best,
Bill Halliwell
