Wierd problem after starting DBW
« on: November 29, 2013, 01:02:03 PM »

I was reticent to post this, but perhaps one of the tech savvy folks can help me here.

Several weeks ago – after having added to or changed nothing about DBW install or my computer – I started DBW, began a mission and then several minutes later, the screen froze and it was suddenly filled with, (for want of a better term)  multi-colored dots or pixels. I had to manually shut down. After I re-booted, everything initially seemed normal, but whenever I ran DBW (or for that matter, stock Il-2) after a few minutes, the problem recurred. Furthermore, now my home screen had horizontal lines. My Nvidia graphics card was obviously not functioning and I couldn’t call up the control panel. I also received a “Code 43” error.

I had not updated or changed the video driver software before this event. However, just to be sure, I uninstalled and reinstalled the latest driver but it made no difference. System restore, startup repair, etc. did nothing. Rebooting had no effect. In fact, things cascaded from there and ultimately I ended up with a black screen once the Microsoft logo vanished after starting. Then I was only able to start in Safe Mode.

Now here’s the additional and I think weirdest wrinkle. After I operated the computer in Safe Mode for a week or so, several days ago, after having shut down, when I rebooted, my graphics were absolutely normal again and my Nvidia card was functioning. Things have been that way since. However, I haven’t shut down and I haven’t dared to run DBW or Il-2, which seemed to have prompted the issue.

Can anyone shed light on this? If it’s a graphics card problem, why did things suddenly get better? Any thoughts. I'd like to get back to Il-2 again but. . .

I've seen a similar case, and, yes, it was the video card slowly dying...  :-\

I second what Bravo and Poltava have posted.
I have seen such a thing too years ago on an old GForce...
first it started to display in wrong colours (I thought that the monitor was going to die) and after a while it shut down completely....a few hours later I headed to a computer store to get a new graphics board;

have you checked if the cooling fan(s) on the board are working and are not clogged by excessive dust?
sometimes, graphics boards have a kind of safety mechanism that prevents them from working in full force if their ventilation is not working....

consider it an early warning - at least while your card is still working, you have time to shop around for a new one.

what is funny is this:
you are running a Graphics intense Program, and find that your Video card  has problems and coughs steam...
Then you cut it all down to the bare minimum and play it safe... not touching the itch you would like to scratch.

You, my friend, you KNOW what's going on.
But you stick your head in the Sand.

call a Tech. tell him to take a look at the card, clean it out and RENEW Thermo Paste.
after that run a program like "speedfan" to check the temperatures while you play.
anything above 75 degree Celsius and you know the Verdict.

to answer your "wth" questions:
things did not get better.
you just didn't push the card any more by not Flying any more.
Give it a go if you dare. See what happens after a few minutes, quart of an hour....

Hi,

Worth checking all your fans are working inside the case and that there is a good airflow to the card and its fans. Sounds like the GPU is running too hot when under load. As others have said, it will fry eventually under heavy (3d) load.

Regards,
