Bombsaways Updates to the LS_Truk Map.
« on: December 25, 2013, 06:31:33 PM »

I have always loved LoneStar's version of the Truk map and I want to bring it up to date with some newer textures, reworking of populating and airfields. I would like to request if anyone has any WWII photos of the actualy place, please send them to me. Thanks.

These pics are of my first bit of progress and I may change some of the textures. You can see around the industrial areas I am using a " dead or trampled grass" look but I dont know if I like it yet. I used it to make it look like a military area where they dont care if the grass is taken care of so its dead. I use a green grass texture in living areas. Anyway this is my new project.

I plan on reworking all the airfield runways to get rid of the gaps in the plates.

Oh yes!  Love that map, and this is even better.  Really nice job.  :)

Maybe a late war version could be worth considering later on...  :p

Thank you Bee. :) And, thank you VERY much for the links. That page has several photos of Truk. Thats great. :) For FPS rates though I may not be able to populate it as much as it truely was but those pics can help me edit map_c for the ports and other areas. :)

It's a superb website.  You can get lost for weeks going through the USAAF photos alone.

A few more to get the blood pumping.  :)

Not sure if those links will load across all devices, but try searching fold3 for individual island names at Truk.  Dublon for example.  You'll get heaps of images at great resolution.  Let me know if you have any trouble and I can upload instead.

Thanks Bee for the cool aerial photos. Great pictures!

Yeah, good idea.
How about using one of those dirt-like runways instead of the square looking tile runways?

In the past, I been thinking about changing a few of the IL2 runways. Nothing major. Just minor little detailed painting
on some of them. To make them more dirty like runways with some tire markings on them, but recently there have been
already many new runways created already. Many of the new maps have these new runway textures.
Check out this post here at SAS... https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,32114.0.html
You can see many screenshots of recent maps and the new painted runways and how they look on certain terrains.
Perhaps you could use one of these already created dirt-like sand runways for the Truk Islands? Give them a try.
Have fun with the new creation!

I agree, I dont like some of our runway plates but some texture runways look like hell when you on the ground. When I reworked the chichi map, the japanese runway texture I used I put a ,2 at the end of its load.ini entry to get it to look as good as possible when on the ground. Its still not perfect but better than not using a ,2. I'm thinking of using that texture again and just use blank runway plates so I dont have to use the normal runway plates.
It would be nice if a 3d guy would do some updating to our plates. :) Hint, hint. :)

Some progress pics of the airfields without concrete runways. There is only one airfield with concrete and I'll get that done today. Then populating.

Now that looks more like an Island airfield from WW2 photos. Very cool artsy work Bombsaway  8)
The different colored textures of gravel, sand and coral stone makes this an ideal looking and very
realistic runaway for the PTO islands. Much better than those square lifeless block runways of the old game.

Perhaps on some islands you will want to include your cool looking steel-platting runways. Those were also
used a lot by the See-Bees in constructing island runways.
